Would you advise Cardinal Mahoney to attend the conclave?
By: Kerry Date: February 20, 2013, 5:20 pm

A Catholic magazine in Italy thinks Cardinal Mahoney should stay
at home and not attend the conclave. I tend to think it may be
wise for him to avoid going and possibly raising more
controversy; but then I'm not a Catholic and in a way it's none
of my business.
From Religion News
HTML http://www.religionnews.com/2013/02/19/controversy-over-cardinal-mahonys-conclave-vote-reaches-vatican/:
On Monday (Feb. 18) Italy’s main weekly, the Catholic magazine
Famiglia Cristiana, put the so-called “Mahony affair” on the
home page of its website, quoting the petition by left-leaning
group Catholic United calling the prelate to “stay home.”
The magazine also asked its readers to share their thoughts on
whether Mahony should attend the conclave. Within hours, the
magazine received hundreds of answers via its website,
overwhelmingly asking the cardinal not to come to Rome.
“Cardinal Mahony should not only stay home from the conclave but
retire to a life of prayer in a monastery,” read one typical
comment. “It seems inconceivable to me that he doesn’t feel the
moral duty to abstain from the conclave,” read another.
By Tuesday, Mahony’s case was on the front page of most of the
main Italian newspapers, prompting the first reactions from
within the Vatican.
I'm voting no.

I voted no. And here is the main reason why. "Mahony, who led
the nation's largest archdiocese from 1985 to 2011, has been
accused of hiding sexual abuse by priests and was recently
sidelined by current Archbishop Jose Gomez." ... Mahony and
others actively tried to shield abusive priests from
prosecution. Gomez called the records "brutal and painful
reading."...La Caramella Buona, an Italian group for victims of
sexual abuse, also called on Mahony not to attend the conclave."
Nonetheless, the 76-year old cardinal remains a
bishop “ in good standing” and retains the right
to vote for the future pope until he reaches age 80.

route.

Frankly, if there is evidence that he shielded abusive priests
he is guilty by association and should be dismissed. Nobody with
certified faulty judgement should be electing the next Pope.

I wasn't going to add fuel to the fire by mentioning the
controversy swirling about Cardinal Keith O'Brien; but the news
that he is resigning and will not be attending the conclave
encourages me. I cannot say I know if he is guilty or innocent
of the charges made against him; but I think he's doing the
right thing to put the welfare of the Church ahead of his
personal life.

And so, does the same fate await New Jerusalem as occurred in
Old Jerusalem?
Not sure what lies ahead. I am not even sure what's
going on now since I read conflicting reports about things in
Rome.
