A spin off of the statement "Joshua was given the power to
stop the sun"

3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon
and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man,
that thou visitest him?
Why did God give Joshua the ability to make the sun stand still?
What is man that God should do this? Why did God give Moses the
ability to divide the Sea of Reeds, and Elijah the ability to
bring the dead back to life?
5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and
hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Joshua 10:12-13
King James Version (KJV)
12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord
delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he
said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon;
and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the
people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this
written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the
midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole
day.
With modern technology and science we now know that this doesn't
appear possible. We now know that the earth spins on its axes at
around 1000 miles per hour, a full cycle counts for our 24 hr
day which includes sun rise and sun set. We also know that the
earth and all the planets orbit around the sun, therefor the sun
doesn't actually move or shall we say the sun neither rises or
sets.
How then can these scripture be true? It would have been a huge
massive event if we are to think that the whole galaxy came to a
dead stand still in order for the sun not to appear as if it was
moving.
Is there another explanation for these scriptures? Is there a
spiritual meaning rather than a literal meaning? I am just
trying to understand what is going on here?

Well George I could just say the bible says it so it must be
true, a bit glib.
Would God cause all of the heavens to stand still for one man to
avenge his holy name , I think he just might.
From a spiritual point of view does it mean that Jesus the risen
Son would stop everything and concentrate all his attention on
you, or me if we cried to him? Yes he would that's how big his
love is.
From a practical point of view might it have been not the sun
but some sort of super nova that took all day to burn out,
anything is possible but whatever the Lord did he did it for a
man just like you and me.

Did the sun stand still? First of all, while the sun is moving
along in the galaxy, its apparent movement in our sky is the
result of the earth's spinning not on any real motion around the
earth. When the Bible speaks of things happening, often it
describes them the way they look to people. If we get too
literal about things, we might suppose God has a finger the way
people have fingers since the Bible says God wrote with a
finger. So what do I think really happened?
Something similar happened at Fatima. From new theological
movement blogspot
HTML http://newtheologicalmovement.blogspot.com/2011/05/fatimas-miracle-of-sun-star-of.html:
On October 13th, 1917, in the presence of as many as 100,000
people (both believers and non-believers) who had gathered near
Fatima in Portugal, according to eyewitness accounts, the sun
began to dance in the sky and then appeared to fall toward the
earth before once again returning to its normal size and place
in the heavens.
This wondrous phenomenon, popularly known as “The Miracle of the
Sun” (O Milagre do Sol), occurred after a downfall of rain which
had left the people and the ground soaking wet. However, after
the miraculous event, witnesses reported that their wet clothing
became “suddenly and completely dry, as well as the wet and
muddy ground that had been previously soaked because of the rain
that had been falling.” According to the Italian priest and
Fatima-scholar, De Marchi, “Engineers that have studied the case
reckoned that an incredible amount of energy would have been
necessary to dry up those pools of water that had formed on the
field in a few minutes as it was reported by witnesses.”
Wikipedia
HTML http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_of_the_Sun
says:
The people had gathered because three young shepherd children
had predicted that at high noon the Blessed Virgin Mary would
appear in a field in an area of Fatima called Cova da Iria.
According to many witnesses, after a period of rain, the dark
clouds broke and the sun appeared as an opaque, spinning disc in
the sky. It was said to be significantly duller than normal,
and to cast multicolored lights across the landscape, the
shadows on the landscape, the people, and the surrounding
clouds. The sun was then reported to have careened towards the
earth in a zigzag pattern, frightening those who thought it a
sign of the end of the world. Witnesses reported that their
previously wet clothes became "suddenly and completely dry, as
well as the wet and muddy ground that had been previously soaked
because of the rain that had been falling".
However not everyone saw things that way --again from Wikipedia:
Despite these assertions, not all witnesses reported seeing the
sun "dance". Some people only saw the radiant colors. Others,
including some believers, saw nothing at all. No scientific
accounts[clarification needed] exist of any unusual solar or
astronomic activity during the time the sun was reported to have
"danced", and there are no witness reports of any unusual solar
phenomenon further than 64 kilometres (40 mi) out from Cova da
Iria.
So what was going on? I refer to similar events of "hauntings."
Suppose you find a room that is haunted by a ghost who opens a
door, walks around and then leaves. If you spent the night, you
may "see" that happening. But suppose you want to test it
scientifically. You spread talcum powder on the floor to detect
footprints, and you put a small amount of wax on the door so if
the door is opened, the wax would be disturbed. Here's what
would probably happen. You would see the ghost opening the
door, and it would look to you as if the wax seal was broken.
As the ghost walked around, you'd see footprints.
However the next morning, the wax seal would be intact and the
talcum powder undisturbed. In short, you were seeing something
that didn't happen in physical terms.
The same problem seems to be involved in some space alien
encounters. I would bet that you couldn't find a case where
anyone was abducted by space aliens that could be verified
scientifically. If you had a camera running, you'd probably see
the abductee lying in bed all night. Something is happening,
but it's not something I think a camera could photograph.
I don't think the sun actually danced at Fatima; and I don't
think it rained. But I think the people who saw those things
happen saw something real enough.
This may seem impossible; but how our human minds work is not
well known. My cat Milhaus was an extraordinary cat. When he
was a kitten, he was downstairs one day with his mother and two
siblings. I was upstairs dozing. Suddenly, I was seeing the
other two kittens and they looked huge to me. I was low on the
floor just where Milhaus must have been. In short, I was seeing
what he was seeing.
Years ago, someone was bothering me by "thinking too loud." We
were both working the stockroom of a drug store; but I kept
seeing a picture of a forest scene. It was strange! I realized
I was not imagining it but it wasn't my picture. For some
reason, he was visualizing this forest and keeping it in his
mind so much he was "broadcasting" it. So I said, "Why are you
thinking about a forest?" At first he didn't want to admit it
and pretended not to be; but I told him he was thinking so loud
about it, I could see it. Then he confessed up. He was
thinking of a pleasant afternoon he had spent with his
girlfriend in that forest.
Normally what we see and hear is the result of "reading" the
input from our physical eyes and ears. We believe this is the
way we see and hear; and for the most part, that is how we do
it. But we also know that we can dream and we can hallucinate.
We can see and hear things which aren't there physically, and
sometimes they're the product of our own imaginations -- and
sometimes they are "input" from the outside.
When a prophet receives a vision with both audio and visual
materials, he knows -- yes, knows -- that it's a vision and not
really happening the physical world. He will often say he saw
someone "like unto" or something "as it were." The confusion
comes about when we are seeing and hearing something but can't
tell if what we're seeing is in the physical world or in the
mental world of thought-forms.
Did Balaam talk to his donkey? Of course not. Not in physical
terms. Donkeys can't talk. But he did talk to the donkey in a
non-physical way.
What did Israel "really" see at Sinai?
Deuteronomy 4:11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain;
and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with
darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
12 And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye
heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye
heard a voice.
13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you
to perform, even ten <sayings>; and he wrote them upon two
tables of stone.
14 And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes
and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go
over to possess it.
15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no
manner of similitude on the day that the Lord spake unto you in
Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
Did they see "a mountain"? I suppose so, and it looked to them
as if the mountain was above them since the text says they were
"under" the mountain.
I believe the establishment of day and night was not altered by
Joshua.
Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest,
and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night
shall not cease.
I believe that it was an illusion. Joshua, being a servant of
God, spoke to the sun and moon, and I say the spiritual
principles obeyed and people then witnessed the spiritual
reality as if it was physical reality. But this was done
without interfering with the rotation of the earth.
I think Jesus had the ability to produce illusions.
John 8:59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid
himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of
them, and so passed by.
He walked right through them. While this is easier to do in the
dream world, it is possible in the physical world as well.
