André Rieu performs
By: Kerry Date: October 2, 2012, 9:29 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
From André Rieu's "Live From Radio City Music Hall" in New York
City 2004, with the Johann Strauss Orchestra and the Harlem
Gospel Choir. I was in Radio City Music Hall once, but I all I
got to see was some movie and the Rockettes in the chorus line
kicking their legs up in the air. Oh yes, I remember an organ
that moved around on the stage.
Have you ever notice that the lyrics say "the kingdom of this
world" while Revelation reads "the kingdoms of this world"? I
think it's probably to avoid singing a long rrrrrr sound. Did
you know Handel had visions when he was writing The Messiah?
Very interesting. Under the power of inspiration, he locked
himself in his room and wrote down the music at a furious pace.
The maid was worried and would knock until he opened the door
to let her bring in food. When she returned, he often hadn't
eaten it. Ah yes, this music came down from Heaven!

I found Rieu doing the Light Cavalry Overture by Franz von
Suppé. I like almost everything von Suppé wrote; and while
it's not religious, it seems to teach us how easily we can run
into disaster if we proceed without thinking with perhaps too
much confidence or pride. It's about the famous (or infamous)
Charge of the Light Brigade, I think. I think. At any rate,
they go in full tilt to meet disaster. I could be wrong; but I
put them together in my mind. Wikipedia
HTML http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge_of_the_Light_Brigade
says
about this event:
The Charge of the Light Brigade was a charge of British cavalry
led by Lord Cardigan against Russian forces during the Battle of
Balaclava on 25 October 1854 in the Crimean War. Lord Raglan,
overall commander, had intended to send the Light Brigade to
pursue and harry a retreating Russian artillery battery near the
front line, a task well suited to light cavalry. Due to
miscommunication at some level in the chain of command, the
sabre-armed Light Brigade was instead sent on a frontal assault
into a different artillery battery, one well-prepared with
excellent fields of defensive fire. Although reaching the
battery under withering direct fire and scattering some of the
gunners, the badly mauled brigade was forced to retreat
immediately, producing no decisive gains and very high British
casualties. It is best remembered as the subject of the poem
"The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson,
whose lines emphasize the valour of the cavalry in carrying out
their orders. Blame for the miscommunication has remained
controversial, as the original order from Raglan itself was
vague.

And for a non-religious piece that is tranquil and one of my
favorites -- Träumerei (Dreaming) by Schumann. Speaking of
the Schumanns, Clara after the death of Robert once admitted to
Queen Victoria that he had published some of her music under
his name because it would have been too hard to get it published
under hers. What a pair they must have been!

Loved this, and the images shown also... especially at the
beginning... the angel on their knees, touching their breast and
pointing to the challis with the light above it. And the soaring
dove with the body of a man...
Peaceful and glorious.

[/quote]The lyrics are from a hymn written by St. Thomas
Aquinas. Translated, they begin:
The angelic bread
becomes the bread of men;
The heavenly bread
ends all prefigurations:
What wonder!
The Lord is eaten
by a poor and humble servant.
