The scheduling seems some serious reform. According to the
article from Wikipedia you cite later, Chelsea qualified by
winning the UEFA Champions League back in May, and Al Ahly by
winning the CAF Champions League in July. Auckland City did
not win the OFC but got "nominated" to the spot, and that was in
August. Four other spots remain up for grabs.
I noticed with some wonderment that an American club,
Philadelphia Union, is still in the running. Those matches
will be held in October. Other confederations will have theirs
in November. That seems late since the final events had been
scheduled for December in Japan.

As for Japan cancelling? This looks political to me. The
current PM is not resigning but announced he won't be running
again so he could devote all his time to getting Covid under
control. That doesn't make sense! Do a good job with Covid,
and he could win the spot again easily. That was an excuse
designed to save face. He already botched his job in handling
Covid.
Japan plowed forward and hosted the Olympics which involved
about 11,000 athletes, yet they cannot manage the Club World Cup
which would involved only six or seven soccer teams? What's
the problem? Just require everyone coming into Japan be
vaccinated. FIFA could also take the lead and require players
and staff to be vaccinated if they wanted to travel for matches
involving international travel.
It is curious that somehow the Egyptian team will get to play in
the Club World Cup, but Mo Saleh was not allowed to play on the
national team for the World Cup.
So what's next, P? I thought about writing to Biden, suggesting
he try to get the matches moved to the USA. Then too, I think
it would be a clever and politically expedient move for Trudeau
to try to get them moved to Canada. Just require that eveyone
coming into Canada be vaccinated. The risk would be very slim,
and Trudeau could brag about how Canada was proving life doesn't
have to come to a stop in order to handle Covid. Just don't
hold the matches in Alberta.
Edit to add: I just found out that Philadelphia Union will play
Club America September 15. I wouldn't be willing to put any
money on Philadelphia.

Relatively speaking, it's not a mess. Confederations don't all
hold their leagues at the same time so some qualify before
others.
The Aukland FC one was strange but understandable since the OFC
had cancelled its Champions League due to the pandemic and
apparently, FIFA was okay with the nomination due to some
sporting merit/criteria.
Go Philadelphia Union! They're in CONCACAF's Champions League.
They're down 2-0 aggregate. Last of 5 MLS clubs in the CCL.
Ya, it would be good PR if China released the two before the
games start.
Mo Salah couldn't play because Egypt was on a pandemic red list
for England. I suppose that he could but then would have to
quarantine which means he could miss his club matches. Anyway,
Egypt didn't need him since they beat Angola 1-0 in Egypt. He
played the next match v Gabon which is on amber.
Biden, Kerry? Trudeau? Club World Cup? Say what?! Is Italy in
that? We thought they just won something big, didn't they?
Maybe if Philly gets through for Biden. Canada won't do. Too
cold at that time.
There's some talk of Canada at least boycotting the Olympics,
but the NHL is sending its American and Canadian players over
and one knows how Canadians are about hockey.

there are indoor stadiums. I'd suggest BC Place as one venue.
Vancouver shouldn't have snow then although it might be cold, so
there shouldn't be a problem navigating the roads. The stadium
is quite suitable.

about detaining foreigners?
If China even goes forward with the Winter Olympics. If they
don't, why not move them to Vancouver also? It's been done
before. The climate problems couldn't be as wild as they were
in Japan. You got a nice big indoor stadium for holding some
events where you don't need snow-- and probably close enough to
snow that they wouldn't need to make fake snow.

The stadium also served as the main stadium for the 2010 Winter
Olympics and 2010 Paralympics which Vancouver hosted, the 2012
CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament, as well as a
venue for multiple matches including the championship match for
the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
I find it odd that the Chinese plan is for events to be held on
mountains with little prospect of real snow.

The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, China with
many of the events being held in the Zhangjiakou and Yanqing
Zones near the city. The only problem is the mountains that will
host the ski events receive basically no snowfall. In fact, the
area that will be hosting the ski events averages a snowpack of
just 2 inches, making the 2022 games the first Winter Olympics
to be held on 100% man-made snow.

and for the Games would rely completely on artificial snow.
There would be no opportunity to haul snow from higher
elevations for contingency maintenance to the racecourses so a

The men play on grass, not artificial turf for FIFA tournaments
which is what one gets with indoor stadiums. A group of female
soccer players tried to sue FIFA over it, citing discriminatory
practices for having the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 on
artificial turf as in BC Place.
Real grass was laid over Pontiac Silverdome's artificial turf
for the 1994 Men's World Cup and I doubt that Canada wants to
lay out millions to retrofit its enclosed stadiums in short
order for a relatively small tournament this year.

I can't see going to the expense of doing real grass if they
already have artificial turf -- it might not even be possible on
such short notice. Real grass is definitely better, but I
suppose the artificial stuff is seen as cheaper in the long run
since it doesn't require as much maintenance.

Qatar is definitely a possiblity. While it's true the
accomodations are currently being used by Afghan refugees, some
of them will be moving to other places.
Brazil is another possibility; but I don't know how eager they'd
be after becoming the emergency host country for the Copa
America. I didn't hear of any major problems, so maybe they'd
be happy to do it. Bolsonaro might see it as more good PR.

good as the real thing.
I won't be surprised if the Winter Olympics get boycotted by
several countries.
Why did China pull out of hosting the Club World Cup but not the
Winter Olympics?

[/quote]Yes, the first mystery appears to be why FIFA agreed to
having it in China in the first place. The article was
informative and well researched.
At first it seems FIFA was talking about delaying the tournament
into 2022 or maybe even later. That was allegedly because Covid
had interfered with so many clubs' schedules, they thought there
wasn't a window of opportunity to hold the tournament.
I suppose you've heard how China imposes severe measures when
there's a few cases of Covid, testing everyone in a city,
cutting off all travel in or out, etc. Scientifically that
makes sense, but I don't know how well Western clubs would react
if China was on a severity kick when the tournament was about to
start. We'll see what happens first with the Olympics. If
those are a disaster because of how China deals with Covid, I
would expect FIFA to cancel a 2022 tournament there.
Changing the subject a bit -- I found it interesting that there
is a "Barcelona" club in the running. When I first saw that, I
was wondering how that was possible, but it's a club in
Barcelona, Ecuador.

Ya, the Ecuadoran club was named by its immigrant founder who
was born in Spain. They're in a Copa Libertadores semi v
Flamengo of Brazil later this month. The Copa's CONMEBOL's
Champions League.
FIFA gave the reason for China. To develop football there.

I'd like to see Al Ahly SC win to show the world that you don't
have to be from Europe or South America or from place withe lots
of money from oil. Monterrey winning would also be fun.
But if Chelsea wins, I hope Pulisic has a starring role.
