Here is what I believe.
It retains the potential to be free but it is not free as long
as a person can be fooled into thinking otherwise. That is
done by tricking him into doing something he knows is wrong,
something he knows goes against the Divine Nature within him
which God gave him. When we return evil for evil, we are
wrecking ourselves more than the other person. We are betraying
that Divine Nature, not trusting in it, not trusting in God.
We must become like an innocent child whose good nature has not
yet been corrupted by the world. That child does good because
he enjoys it -- it's part of the Divine Nature.
It's when we say, "I cannot love because the world is too
dangerous a place to show that kind of weakness" that we give up
part of our freedom to act.
The Christian who sees how Jesus loved us and who didn't care
that much if people killed him, that he would retain that Love
no matter what, sees if it safe to imitate him.
The person who is truly free always does good. The person who
does evil is not free. He may believe he has free will, but
it's a false will -- it is not the "will" that God gave him.
Are you referring perchance to what Isaiah wrote of the
hypocrites in his day who had a "righteous" exterior while they
were rotten inwardly?
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our
righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a
leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up
himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from
us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
If you read what I wrote, you may discover I agree with you that
only God is good. If we see someone doing good, we are seeing
God at work. That person is allowing the Divine Nature (the
image and likeness of God) in him to work with God to allow the
good to happen.
If the Spirit shows us how we can do something good, we really
should obey the Spirit and do it.
James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth
it not, to him it is sin.
It is sin because God showed us how to express the Divine Nature
He gave us, and we didn't allow God to work through us.

yes what you say is true enough but evil is being done whilst
claiming inspiration, guidance and indwelling by the Holy Spirit

Is that a true statement?
What about Lucifer , he obviously has a choice ...and he chose
not to serve God...
So Im not sure I can agree that someone who is truly free
always does good!!!

Paul said...'we are free, but do not use that freedom for an
occasion for the flesh.'
How true. We shouldn't be like rebellious teenagers who
think they are expressing freedom and wind up in terrible
trouble and need Daddy and Mommy to help them out if they don't
wind up dead.

I don't think you know the difference between being truly free
and not being truly free. If you ever had your free will taken
from you then maybe you would know the difference.
You have no idea what I'm talking about which is good. I
wouldn't wish that on anybody.
