Mack The Knife - the German Version
By: HOLLAND Date: March 12, 2019, 7:03 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
A person has pointed out to me that my main fictional character
in my stories, Adrian Macheath Stemple, could be inspired by
Mack The Knife, a character found in several songs. This is not
correct. I was inspired originally by Asian knife and stick
martial arts such as tanto-jutsu, bo-jutsu, and the techniques
of the balisong, which permits both stick and knife fighting.
This quality of the balisong allows for mercy since stick
fighting does not have to find an ending in a bloody death.
Mack The Knife is an interesting song. Here is one of the
       versions:

Mack The Knife, in the songs, is only a criminal, an English
       criminal.

       Holland - ^
The vid looks like it could belong in a Sprockets skit.
I've heard the Bobby Darin version multiple times and always
thought it was a metaphor for a certain kind of man who loves
and leaves women, a kind of "lady-killer" but now I discover
it's about a literal one in an opera I've never seen. I think I
prefer the metaphor and Darin's version, though I don't care at
all for anyone acting this way.

You may not believe it, but I have that Hildegaarde Knef
version on vinyl. I never understood what it was about. I
heard it in English but never understood it. :D
Here's Ernie Kovacs with his version:

^^^I suppose that those that walk in darkness have the mystery
that attracts people as it did so much back then. What I find
interesting are those that have the power and walk in the light
and show the mystery of who they are by their mercy, especially
when it is unexpected. Perhaps I shall always be attracted to
those who have power and do not use it as the world expects them
       to use it.
My fictional character, Adrian Macheath Stemple, in my stories,
uses the balisong while closed primarily as a palm stick weapon.
I tend to think of him as a shining example of mercy leaving
questions of justice to others. He does not allow others to
escape justice and because of that he is the polar opposite of
Mack the Knife in the songs.

[/quote]I had a defective view of power for a long time since I
connected it with egoism. Then I had an experience that told me
some can desire power in order to do good. If innocent people
are being abused and no good person has the power and will to
       stop it, evil triumphs.

       Kerry -
That Kovacs version is like a drill going through my head. Maybe
       it was meant that way?
