Another Fourth of July
By: HOLLAND Date: July 4, 2018, 7:50 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
As the President is beginning to equate dissent with disloyalty
to country, I'm reminded of the past, of the Vietnam War era.
The President, who has much to say about patriotism ducked five
times from having to chance to fight and die for his country in
Vietnam. Like all of the "chickenhawks" in the Republican Party
in the last thirty years, they've had a lot to say about
patriotism and getting us into wars, but when their time was
upon them, they ducked out going to war. They would not leave
their comfortable lives and their struggle for wealth and power
for such a thing called patriotism. They were "too busy" and
had "better things to do" than to trouble themselves about this.
They don't really know the country that they lead and
financially profit from.
War is a deep tragedy and a lot of pain. This song brings it
all out.

Wow. I haven't heard this song since it played on my radio dial
back in the day. It's all coming back to me!
You know, I might have apparently been born a U.S. American. My
Dad's brother moved there and he asked my Dad to join him . My
Dad said that he didn't want his son to have to go to war in
Vietnam. He had been through WWII.
I did watch the Macy's fireworks show last night on NBC and also
the one from the Capitol on PBS.
Your country was forged in rebellion. Mine in a struggle between
two colonial powers. The way of the world apparently.

It's a blast from the past, para. The song and images tend to
haunt the American psyche of a certain age and generation. It
was at the twilight point of a cycle of American liberalism and
many wonder if and how things could have been done differently.
Now we are at the twilight point of another cycle of American
conservativism, and we're wondering about the future.
Soon we are going to be under crushing debt and under a crushing
elite that will seek to divide us further, if they can. And the
American Dream, so called, will be dead. In Christ, though, we
shall come to a new morning . . .

A lot of Vietnam veterans became disillusioned with popular
music as it became anti-Vietnam war. They were drawn to their
own forms of music. They were very passionate about Creedance
Clearwater Revival. This was one of their favorites.

The images of the above video are haunting. It's hard to think
that that war is now almost fifty years ago. It is tragic that
many of the survivors of that war, suffering from PTSD, actually
died in that war though their bodies still live. Regrettably,
some forms of mental suffering don't allow for the recovery,
even though everything seems alright with them. Sometimes, one
must suffer a living death before death finally arrives. It is
too bad that tragedy can be lifelong.

Yes tragic indeed. I can't imagine that kind of trauma. It's no
wonder they suffer from PTSD. It's like a never ending nightmare
that you can't wake up from.
CCR was one of my favorites back in the day. This is one that I
thought of by them.

A lot of the Vietnam veterans liked CCR, Heartsong. I
understood that all of those songs were favorites over there.
Many of the Vietnam veterans turned away from much of pop music
when it became anti-war.
There were those singers, though, whose songs reached into the
hearts of the veterans of that war after they've returned home.
One was Joan Baez. She appealed greatly to the veterans seeking
inner peace. "Forever Young" is a song that resonates with
them.

Here is another healing song of that time, by Crosby, Stills,
Nash and Young:

Graham Nash hit upon the idea that a person "must have a code to
live by". In other words, that person must have and set
boundaries in life in order to become oneself. These boundaries
become a demarcation in life that allows for the growth of
personal values and individuality. Those that fail to do so
become inwardly hollow such as our current President.
For veterans, the code is the honor and purpose of their
military service enhanced by those who never went to war. War
can be difficult, but sometimes peace is more difficult.

I've heard it said that this song "Paint It Black" by the
Rolling Stones was the most popular song for the veterans of the
Vietnam War. It is a song about death, the death of a beloved
young wife and the mourning of a young man. It resonated with
the troops who experienced the emotional ending of their world
when they completed their tour and returned home, many times to
broken relationships. The images, like the song, are rather
haunting . . .

Here is another healing song from the 1960s, Bob Dylan's "Man of

Here's another healing song of the period. It is Richie Haven's
cover of "Here Comes The Sun". It is a song that embodies much
hope.
