       MLS

I thought that the MLS might want its own space here for anyone
       interested in the League.
Its season basically starts this weekend. So soon? It just seems
its last season just ended a couple of months ago. It ended
earlier. It was a long wait to the final however.
Here's a survey from general managers about elements of it
       that's a quick slide-show:
  HTML http://www.sportingnews.com/ca/soccer/list/mls-gm-survey-toronto-fc-atlanta-united-pegged-for-standout-2018/mcmujb2633wz1dmkca8ebkj9h
The most expensive transfer fee in MLS history happened just
recently with the Argentine Ezequiel Barco from Independiente
going to a very ambitious Atlanta United FC for 15 million USD.
Unfortunately, he won't be able to start for 4-6 weeks due to
       injury:
Ezequiel Barco is certainly the most impressive signing in MLS
history. His $15 million transfer fee is a league record, and
it’s stunning that Atlanta United was able to convince an
18-year-old who’s starred for Argentina Under-20 to pick it over
European suitors. But his capture will not signal a new era of
MLS or set a new standard for ambitious buys unless its other 22
       owners want it to.
Right now, Barco is just the league’s most impressive capture
since Atlanta signed Paraguayan international Miguel Almiron.
There is currently only one owner — Atlanta’s Arthur Blank —
willing to make moves in the transfer market that would be
considered daring by any kind of global standard. The rest of
the owners in MLS continue to play it safe, keeping spending low
       while achieving slow, steady growth.
Between the signings of Almiron and Barco, eight other
Designated Players under the age of 23 have been signed in MLS.
The transfer fees for all eight of those players were under $5
million. No other team has spent even one-third as much as
Atlanta in its big signings during the past year.:

I found out they said in 2010 they were thinking about changing
       it.
  HTML https://www.reuters.com/article/us-soccer-mls-calendar/mls-prepared-to-align-schedule-with-fifa-calendar-idUSTRE6AL0GB20101122
       - Major League Soccer is ready to get in step with the rest of
the soccer world and align its schedule with the international
calendar, MLS commissioner Don Garber said on Sunday.
“Long term we believe we will probably have to find a way to
change to the (international) calendar,” Garber told reporters
ahead of the MLS Cup between the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas.
”We’re working with our clubs to see what impact it would have
       on them.
”It really is going to be a lot of work but we are making the
       commitment.
”I‘m not saying we’re doing it, we’re doing the work to see if
       we can.
“There’s no rush. It is going to take us a long time even after
we have decided to execute a plan like this.”
Maybe they should hurry up a little.
       March 2017
  HTML https://ussoccerplayers.com/2017/03/mls-needs-to-stop-playing-during-the-international-window-soccer.html
You may have spent the past few days enjoying the bevy of World
Cup Qualifiers available during the international window. You
may have even found your way to San Jose to witness the USA’s
6-0 romp of Honduras Friday night. The marathon of World Cup
qualifiers from across the globe as teams fight for spots at
Russia 2018 produced plenty of compelling games and lots of
       wonderful goals.
If you are an MLS fan, however, there were games on the
schedule. The biggest leagues in Europe took the weekend off,
Major League Soccer – impervious to the FIFA calendar and
international dates – moved right along as if nothing was
different. That’s been the case since the league started in
       1996.
The MLS schedule wasn’t as packed as it usually is. There were
only three games, all played Saturday. There shouldn’t have been
any. I’m not asking for MLS to move to an August-to-May schedule
like Europe’s major domestic leagues, but it should try abiding
       by the international window.
The article goes on to describe how dull a game he attended was
because the best players were not there but off for
       international games.
The issue was very apparent Saturday afternoon, when some fans
took a break from the overabundance of games on TV (how badly
did you really want to see Luxembourg-France?) to catch a match
in person. In my case, it was the one-hour train ride from my
Manhattan to the Jersey suburbs to see the Red Bulls host Real
Salt Lake. This matchup had lots of storylines. RSL came into
Red Bull Arena without its coach Jeff Cassar, fired earlier in
the week after just three games. In his place, temporarily, was
goalkeeper coach Daryl Shore at the helm. As for the Red Bulls,
the team’s loss to Seattle the previous week on the road snapped
an 18-game regular season unbeaten streak that had stretched
back all the way back to July 2016.
Instead, what we got was a mediocre game from two teams missing
their best players because of international duty. In other
words, the players not there were the bigger story rather than
the ones who took the field. Both lineups were beset with
absences. The Red Bulls were missing key players such as
playmaker and captain Sacha Klejstan (USA) as well as defender
Michael Murillo (Panama) and forward Derrick Etienne (Haiti).
Meanwhile, RSL – already crippled with injuries – was without
starting goalkeeper Nick Rimando and midfielder Albert Rusnak
       (Slovakia).
Without Klejstan, New York’s offensive failed to get it done.
The team had three clear chances on goal but the game ended
scoreless. Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch, not one to mince words,
was not happy about having to play without one of his best
       players.

The weather seems to be the biggest concern. Europe generally is
milder during winter months. I really don't mind it so much now.
I have an eternal summer watching soccer. When Europe's getting
done, MLS is in stride. When MLS is done, Europe's in stride.
Nice to see blue skies and green pitch in the middle of January.

Since moving to LAFC from Real Sociedad, Carlos Vela has been
asked one question more than any other.
What does his move to MLS mean for his role with the Mexican
national team at the World Cup?
While most of El Tri’s player pool are playing in Mexico and
European leagues on a fall-to-spring calendar, Vela, his
MLS-based countrymen like the LA Galaxy’s Giovani and Jonathan
dos Santos and other Russia 2018 hopefuls will be in midseason
form when the summer tournament arrives. Vela hopes it can help
him arrive in Russia with fresher legs than most of his
       compatriots.
“I think we [MLS players] are fresh,” Vela told an ESPN panel
during MLS media day last month when asked about it. “We can be
in the World Cup during my best moment of the season.”
His teammate and fellow World Cup veteran Laurent Ciman echoes
       that mindset.
“It’s more advantageous for us,” LAFC’s Belgian international
said through a translator when asked about his new teammate’s
comments. “We are only going to play for three months before the
       World Cup.”

Toronto FC suffered as a mediocre club through most of its
history and now as a decent club, they'll suffer at times as MLS
Champions. Clubs are out to dethrone them. They were beaten in
their home opener v Columbus Crew 2-0 who looked like they were
hungry for the win after having been dispatched by Toronto in
previous matches. TFC looked sloppy with a number of errant
       passes in midfield.
Both Columbus' goals were well served with Frederico Higuain's
(Gonzalo Higuain's [of Juventus] brother) booming one into the
back of the net past Alex Bono.
Talk of a "dynasty" for TFC is premature and silly at this
       point.
