It is interesting that the true patriot of one's country belongs
to the future. The true patriot seeks to better the country in
mercy, charity and justice . . .

Yes, this wish for the best in the future shows a love of one's
country and of its people. Did you know that when the news
first came that the war was over, Lincoln asked the band to play
Dixie?

^^^Yes, Kerry, Lincoln asked the band to play "Dixie" at a
Serenade outside his White House window shortly after the
surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. He confessed at the
time that he always liked the song. His short speech at that
Serenade is one of the last speeches that appear in his
collected works. It is intriguing how Reconstruction would have
went if he had been permitted to live . . .

I think of this song as patriotic. I wish we had more songs
like this today. We surely need more messages today of "love
between my brothers and my sisters." Forget the angry rhetoric,
folks. Speak of freedom and love.

Ya, you know, I suppose it's okay to complain about stuff but if
that's all anyone has to offer instead of something constructive
then it's a civilization generally in decline.
