       CONCACAF Gold Cup (1991- )
By: paralambano Date: April 3, 2017, 3:09 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Okay, so for any North Americanos interested or others, this is
the international tournament for North America, Central America,
and Caribbean (CONCACAF) nations for soccer (men). It takes
place this year July 7-26. It happens every two years and this
year it's at 14 venues across the USA (Cleveland, Denver, San
Francisco, Harrison N.J., Houston, Nashville, San Antonio, San
Diego, Tampa, Arlington, Glendale, Pasadena, Philadelphia, Santa
       Clara).
Each region of the world sends its international winner to the
Confederations Cup which happens every four years. Europe has
the UEFA Euros, South America the Copa America, Africa the
Africa Cup of Nations, Asia the AFC Asian Cup, Oceania the OFC
       Nations Cup.
So, for CONCACAF (35 nations) in their tournament, three teams
get automatic berths, the USA, Canada, and Mexico and the rest
play to enter. There are 12 countries that have qualified for
       the tournament.
       Their groups are:
       A. Honduras, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Canada
       B. USA, Panama, Martinique, Nicaragua
       C. Mexico, El Salvador, Curacao, Jamaica
The top two in each group and the top two third place finishers
get to move out of the group stage (where each play one another
in the group) to the quarter-finals.
Being able to win the Gold Cup to enter the Confederations Cup
gives the CONCACAF winner a chance to play against some of the
best national teams in the world as a precursor or warm-up to
the World Cup if they qualify for the latter. This year the
Confederations Cup has Chile (CONMEBOL), Portugal (UEFA),[/i]
Cameroon (AFC), New Zealand (Oceania), Germany (World Cup
winner 2014), Australia (Asia), host nation Russia (UEFA),
       Mexico (CONCACAF).
Only three teams have ever won the Gold Cup, Mexico (7X), USA
(5X), Canada (1X). From this we might see that Mexico and the
USA are the powerhouses of CONCACAF. As a result, the two appear
       to have a strong rivalry.
Mexico is representing CONCACAF this year in the Confederations
Cup taking place in Russia (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Sochi,
       Kazan).
So, if one hears strange names like CONCACAF, Curacao, etc in
the sporting news or comes across the alphabet soup of region
titles, it's probably in regard to the beautiful game this
       summer and next.
As a Canadian interested in the game, I hope to watch some games
that come my way since my national team is involved. Fair play
       and enjoyment for all :).
       Go, go, brave Ca-na-da!
Shake it like a Barcelona :-\!

The USMNT have given out their roster for the Gold Cup
Tournament 2017. As expected, their Euro-club players have been
given the summer off by Bruce Arena. Here's the USA roster:
       GK

       GK
       Defenders:

The Canadians have yet to give their 23-man roster, just a
40-man provisional one with Cyle Larin out due to a DUI charge.
I'll give the Canadian roster when Zambrano whittles it to 23 by
       June 27.
It seems like it's all about qualifying for the World Cup for
the Americans, so Arena has decided to rest Wood, Pulisic, et al
until the qualifiers starting again September 1. I can't see
European national teams resting their stars for the UEFA Euros
so seriously do they take this tournament. I would have had the
Euro-players on the pitch for the Gold Cup anyway since the
USMNT needs to really gel together before Russia and this gives
them a perfect opportunity to do so. So now, their European
clubs much to the delight of their managers and fans will have
them fresh, rested and ready for the UEFA pre-season. Maybe the
team Arena has assembled will win the Gold Cup anyway but it
won't be the one he'll take to Russia 2018.

       see how that works out.

ussoccer.com: Dom Dwyer, Kenny Saief, Cristian Roldan and Kelyn
Rowe are the newcomers to the group. Could you speak to their
qualities and the reason you chose to bring them in now?
BA: “Well they’re all good players for sure. We were fortunate
that Kenny just recently received his clearance from FIFA. He’s
a player that we observed with Gent in Belgium. He plays on the
left side of midfield, a position where we can use some help,
       and he’s a good left-footed player from what we’ve seen. It’ll
be interesting to see him in camp to see how he fits in with our
group. Dom Dwyer as we know has had a very good number of years
       in M.L.S. He’s a proven goal scorer, a hard worker and a
left-footed striker which we’re a little short of as well. He’s
a very competitive guy, and I think he has a game that may fit
in very well at the international level.
“Roldan and Rowe continue to be outstanding players for their
club teams. Although they’ve never been capped before, they’re
very good players in Major League Soccer. Roldan is more of a
No. 6 or No. 8 type of player, and Rowe can play in a number of
positions. They’re good players, and it’s great to have them in
       camp.”
Being left-footed probably would be an advantage of sorts since
the opposing players are accustomed to dealing with right-footed
       people.
Saief said he always wanted to play for the US. This may work
out, he may prove to be a good fit.

Saief was born in Panama City, Florida, but grew up in Israel.
He told ESPN FC in March that he always wanted to represent the
       U.S.
"I hope I will get a call from the United States; let's be
honest," he said then. "The U.S. is a much bigger and better
national team than the Israeli national team. They qualify for
almost every World Cup, and it's a dream of every football
player to play in the World Cup. So that is where I want to
       play. I'm just waiting."
Saief joined Gent in 2014 and started for the Belgian team in
the Champions League last year as it made a run to the round of
       16. He has been a key part of its success this season, both in
the domestic league and the Europa League. He played 90 minutes
in both legs of Gent's round-of-32 victory over Tottenham.

It looks like Octavio will have some non-North American club
players at the tournament. I mean, we can use all the help we
can get. Patrice Bernier has a lot of experience (37 years old)
       having played in Europe.
Notably missing from the USMNT are Jozi Altidore (Toronto FC),
Michael Bradley (Toronto FC) and Clint Dempsey (Seattle
Sounders). My understanding is that Arena can bring them in
after the group stage if the Americans advance.

There's a friendly between The Stars and Stripes and The Black
Stars (Ghana) (AFC) July 1 at Pratt and Whitney Stadium in East
Rutherford, New Jersey. The Ghanians are probably the biggest
rivals of the USMNT outside of CONCACAF having knocked the
Americans out twice in the World Cup and a good tune-up for the
Gold Cup for anyone Arena puts out there in his 23. The
Americans defeated The Black Stars in the group stage of the
2014 World Cup last but have only one win against three losses
and no draws against this nation. The 2014 game drew the most
viewers of any soccer game watched in the USA.
Good for Saief being eager to play for the USMNT but I don't
know that the USA are necessarily better than The Blue and
Whites (Israel) since the Israelis have a 5 wins, 3 losses and 1
draw with the Stars and Stripes albeit all in international
friendlies. He could very well be correct about the current
       American team.
We'll see how Saief does against the Ghanians. In any case, I'm
off to watch Chile-Portugal in less than an hour.

That would feel good, wouldn't it? He was born in the UK and
played for but moved to the US and became an American citizen.

Born in Cuckfield, West Sussex, Dwyer spent his youth with
Norwich City, and King's Lynn Community Football, an elite
program affiliated with a few professional clubs in England. He
studied at the College of West Anglia from 2006 to 2008. During
this time, he broke his right foot three times and as a
consequence was told by doctors that he would never be
physically capable of playing at a professional level. From
there, he was given an opportunity by scout Joe McLaughlin of
Soccer Icon USA to get a sports scholarship to study for a
college degree in the U.S., Dwyer has said that he accepted the
offer to get a free degree and that at the time he had given up
on the dream of a football career.
Dwyer moved from England to attend Tyler Junior College in
Texas, where he won two national championships and was the
national junior college player of the year after scoring 37
goals as a sophomore. After two years at Tyler, he made the move
to the University of South Florida, where he played in 2011.
It's amazing about the ankle. He's playing, and he scored in
       this international competition.
I find it interesting too that he took the offer to get a free
degree. Maybe the US could improve its teams if more colleges
offered free tuition to foreign players.

Ya, I think it could feel good to contribute to a country's
success in sport. Imagine being in the US squad in Russia next
year, just one of 32 nations. There one stands with the stars on
one's shoulders and the stripes across one's chest and just
having blistered a ball fairly into pick-your-opponent's goal in
the Whoa Daddy! of team sporting tournaments. Just one of 32 but
perhaps to many worldwide, the USA. Many athletes dream of these
things. It's not curing cancer but it could be all right. . .
