The discussion on another thread has prompted this question: Is
unrequited love a "gift" from God?

In the discussion of whether or not the ability to love is a
gift from God, perhaps we need to see the absence of that love
is, possibly, a gift of God as well. With the gift of life,
some gifts from God are painful you know. . .

[/quote]As the lyrics put it, he didn't hurt her -- he hadn't
done anything. If we choose to love, that is a choice which
means we will hurt if it's not returned and there are no
guarantees.
Was this gift intended to be painful? I'd say no -- but the
risk is there. When God created us, He took a risk -- a really
big risk. What if He loved us and we didn't love Him back? It
was worth the risk, He decided. If He didn't take that risk, He
would never have anyone to love and it was certain there would
be no "other" who had the potential to love Him in return. One
slams the door on the possibility of a two-way love if one isn't
willing to love.
Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and
honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy
pleasure they are and were created.
Will God's creatures come to love Him? I say yes. For Him to
"win" this game, He must persevere in His Love for His
creatures, willing to wait until they decide to love in return.
Does every knee bow in fear or in adoration? I say love. When
we tire of rejecting the Love of God and see Him for what He is,
we realize it's what we wanted all along.
Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my
mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every
knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
"Time" is on God's side. Remember the story about the Prodigal
Son?

One reaches the point Peter reached, "Lord, to whom shall we
go?" There is no other place, no other one, to go to.
I am confident too that time is on my side. Those I have loved
in this life who did not love me? It's a matter of time. They
will be saved; they must be saved. This is how Jesus taught
Peter to be a fisher of men. If you can choose love even when
others are crucifying you, they must be saved -- they are caught
in the net of love. It was impossible then for the Romans who
nailed Jesus to the cross not to be saved. As long as Jesus
could keep loving them, they would be caught in the net of Love.
They did not know what they were doing. They would find out
some day. They would "come to their senses" one day just as the
Prodigal Son did.
Luke 15:17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired
servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I
perish with hunger!
The salvation of the world does not depend on God and Jesus
alone. They use us too. If we can love without faltering, one
day all our tears will be wiped away. Everyone we loved will be
saved.
Revelation 7:17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne
shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of
waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Some tears are sacred. The angels collect them. They will not
be forgotten until those we love find peace and harmony along
with us.
Psalm 56:8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into
thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
Time, time, time. When the time is right and our prayers can
be answered, the prayers can be offered up to God.
Revelation 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts
and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having
every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which
are the prayers of saints.
So we see that tears can be made into joy.
The ability to persist in loving even when it's painful?
Blessed are you if you learn to do it. Evil can be transmuted
into good. Darkness can be made light.
Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and
persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you
falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in
heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before
you.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his
savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for
nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of
men.

^^^It would seem, Kerry, that if unrequited love can be a gift
from God, the ability to love can be a gift from God. If life
is a gift from God, what it contains is part of that gift. The
gift can be misused. There can be pain. I agree, Kerry. Love
is at the heart of it all . . .
