Okay . . . . . Octavio Zambrano earns his first win in first
game as coach of Canada's Men National Team (CMNT) v Curacao 2-1
at Stade Saputo in Montreal. Okay, so it was a friendly with
swaths of empty seats. But, boy did the fans who attend make
noise. These are the die-hard socceronis. The game was notable
for a sixteen-year-old Alphonso Davies making his debut as a
       substitute and playing well.
Zambrano finally has this team playing attacking football or so
it seems. The final third was was very entertaining. It's a long
way for us being ranked 109th. Curacao is ranked 70th. They have
       a population of 150,000.

Substitute Anthony Jackson-Hamel, however, buried a long shot at
87 minutes to win it on the same pitch he performs on in the MLS
       for the Montreal Impact.
Four players made their Canada debuts.
“The youth in this team have lots of energy,” said
Jackson-Hamel. “The young players are giving everything to get
       their place in the lineup.”

       Kerry -
We'll see how the CMNT does in the Gold Cup starting in July.
Did you know that Arena has been reported to say that he won't
have his Euro-club players in his 23 at the Gold Cup which is
being played across the USA? He's given Pulisic, Wood, Yedlin et
al the summer off citing their long Euro season. What a
disappointment for some fans and myself. I want the CMNT to go
up against the very best the USMNT has to give for their
development. I can understand Osorio not having his top XI for
this tournament since Mexico will be competing in Russia this
weekend and further in the Confederations Cup.
It might turn out okay however for the USA since Bruce has
proved me wrong before but it raises some questions for me
relative to how well-prepared Euro players are in their
equivalent competition, the Euros. The thing is, the Euros
happen every four years and the Gold Cup every two. It could be
that it's asking too much. I wonder what Pulisic thinks about
it. I don't buy the claim that the Gold Cup isn't a prestigious
tournament so no big deal. It ought to be respected as much as
the South Americans prize their Copa America, Africans, their
Africa Cup of Nations, Europeans, their Euro, etc.. Who will
respect CONCACAF if CONCACAF doesn't start respecting itself
       first.

He may know what he's doing. Don't forget that it was a
substitute player who made that score in the last three minutes
of the game, and he said the newer players were eager to prove
       their mettle.
In a way, he may be very clever. Some of the top players may
get the summer off; and this will likely endear him to them.
But they will also know, if some of the other players do really
well, that they'd better not be slouches when they get back.
They may be in better form when they come back, feeling
refreshed and ready to go. All work and no play makes Jack a
dull boy -- and if things are the same old thing over and over
again, I imagine even playing a sports game would start to feel
       like work.
I imagine it will also give him a better idea of how these other
players perform under pressure, giving him the chance to get
them to improve. A good coach or manager might find it
difficult to get other players the chance to play if he would
have to put his best players on the sidelines. It could anger
them and the fans, especially if he guessed wrong and they lost
a game with the best players being present.

I can imagine how pleased the Euro-club coaches are with Arena's
decision to leave off his Euro-club players for the Gold Cup.
They'll come back to Europe all refreshed for their leagues'
pre-seasons in August sometime. Club coaches do not like
international matches for the injuries they can foster.

Ya, a good coach knows how to keep his players competitive
within the squad. This boosts their performances.
Still, as a fan, I feel somewhat "cheated" not having the
complete quality there in the Gold Cup. I understand that for
the USMNT it's pretty much all about winning the World Cup since
they've won the Gold Cup already several times but I hope that
the Gold Cup isn't slighted by this ambition. I would be
watching the USMNT or Canada (!) playing in Russia these two
weeks in the Confederations Cup as CONCACAF reps instead of
Mexico if either of these national teams had won the Gold Cup
       last.

Octavio Zambrano fired from coaching the Canadian National Men's
       Soccer Team. Amazing.
Very little transparency from the CSA. This after getting this
team to play fluid, beautiful, attacking football, the best I've
ever seen them play. He took them to the quarter-finals of the
Gold Cup last, farther than they had gotten since 2009.
Zambrano said he'd hold a press conference. As far as I know, he
       hasn't yet.
The replacement? John Herdman, the Woman's National coach. This
with the FIFA Women's World Cup happening next year in France.
Christine Sinclair, captain, first tweeted that she was
"speechless" over Herdman's appointment. He had built up a great
rapport and success with the women.
The rumour is that the CSA should never have hired Zambrano,
that he was late or missing at meetings and failed to deliver on
a contract that said he was to oversee the development of
       players from youth on up.
What?! They already have Jason DeVos for that. The fact of the
matter was what showed up on the pitch for Canada and it
kick-started some joy and hope for me for this sad-sack soccer
country. I was actually excited to see Zambrano's team out
there, CANADA, not having me feel ashamed of their play. A good
coach knows how to make mediocre players better. The team was
looking South American in their play.
Herdman's no slouch. He improved the women. What bugs me is the
lack of transparency. Those who follow the national teams
through all these years deserve better.
       Good luck, John.
