Sorcery?

This is crazy. Is it "sorcery"? From
HTML http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2016/09/02/199091724/video-this-is-one-of-the-craziest-foul-to-fair-groundballs-you-will-ever-seen
We've talked a lot about sorcery on this blog. Here's an
example, and another and one more. But what happened between the
El Paso Chihuahuas (a Padres Triple-A affiliate) and Las Vegas
51s (Mets) on Thursday is downright disturbing.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, 51s batter Eric
Campbell nubbed a foul ball in the direction of the first-base
dugout and then, well, just watch (warning: the following may be
unsettling for some viewers):
Yes, as you can see, that ball was nearly in the first-base
dugout and wound up cutting back across into fair territory for
the easy out at first base.
Look at the ballboy thinking he was gonna get himself a ball!
Not tonight, ballboy!
Does Chihuahuas first baseman Diego Goris have a giant baseball
magnet in his glove? Did pitcher Eric Yardley throw a yo-yo to
the plate instead of a baseball? Is there some giant chihuahua
in the sky controlling ground balls with its mind?
We may never know, and honestly -- do we even want to?
You Tube also had it.
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZIwEV-_LE4
My guess is the ball had a lot of spin on it. . . .

I had to watch that clip several times. First there was the
question of how he did it. Did he do it on purpose? Had he
practiced such shots? Did he know where to kick the ball to
give it that spin?
I'm thinking maybe he did. Maybe he was trying to pass it to
the other fellow so he could kick it in; but it didn't look like
that to me after watching it several times. The other guy was
a little too far back, I thought.
Out on my paper route, I was wondering what the goalie was
doing. I can sympathize with him if he didn't think anyone
could kick the ball from the side that way and make a goal; but
what was he doing? Why did he go so far away from the goal?
Trying to get possession of the ball? Oh my, did he ever
misjudge that situation.
I was in the gym one day in high school -- I forget why I was
there, waiting for someone I think -- and our team's basketball
star was in there too. We got along fine in school so we were
talking; and he was showing me some of his stuff. He showed
me how he could stand in front of the basket and make the ball
hit the backboard on the left side of the basket and then have
it bounce into the basket. How useful that was in games, I
don't know -- but he seemed to enjoy being able to do it.
I found another startling video but can't figure out which clip
it's from at You Tube or where it is inside the clip. So I'll
post the link to the Guardian's version
HTML https://www.theguardian.com/sport/video/2016/sep/04/spennymoor-town-goalkeeper-scores-80-yard-free-kick-in-fa-cup-qualifier-video<br
/>of it. It doesn't involve spin though.
The Spennymoor Town goalkeeper Dan Lowson scores an
80-yard free-kick in the first round of FA Cup qualifying
against Radcliffe Borough on Saturday. The footage posted on
Spennymoor Town FC’s official YouTube page shows Lowson scoring
a free-kick from inside his own box, with the ball’s bounce
catching his opposite number by surprise. Moors went on to win
5-3
Taking the "opposite number" by surprise? I'd say so! Is
there a lesson for us in that? Could be. Be prepared for
almost anything!
And then this fellow in a wheelchair and doing flips!

I've watched Mohamad Salah play for Fiorentina and Roma as a
forward. He's very good on the ball and speedy. I'd say he was
going for goal with his kick. These players practice all sorts
of things with the ball and some have a good "feel" for the way
the ball is in motion. Some Latins even treat it like a
girlfriend, kissing and caressing it before a game. When they
miss, some will call out "puta" meaning that the ball had
betrayed them. I've seen a female, Brazilian team-member mouth
this word in a game this summer when things didn't go her way.
The keeper was very brave to come out as he did. He could have
gotten an accidental boot in the face. As far as I know, Salah
is not a dirty player. It looked like the keeper was trying to
possess the ball but failed to hold onto it. He might have done
better to have punched it out wide but listen to me Monday
morning quarterbacking.
It looks to me that it was poor keeping by the Radcliffe goalie.
He might have misjudged the bounce as it got over him. Some
canny players wait for keepers to come too far off their line
when the ball is in the opposite half and then have a go over
them from their end of the field. A wonderful goal from just
past the half-way line for Roma was scored by Alessandro
Florenzi this way v my team, FC Barcelona in the Champions
League last season:

Yes, I bet some do try to stay alert to see if the keepers
stray out a little too far. It looked to me as if the defense
was expecting him to pass the ball to the player who was closer
-- like how many players were trying to block an attempted
future goal by the guy who was closer? Two others and the
goalie?

The keeper's team-mate was where he should have been - - trying
to block Salah whatever he was going to do on the ball. The
other defender in white was also where he was supposed to be - -
rushing back to prevent Salah's Roma team-mate from receiving a
square or cut-back pass. Unfortunately for his opponents,
neither were able to prevent the goal. The keeper has to protect
an area 8' X 24' without really knowing what the ball-carrier
will do. He has to be a quick-thinker and a quicker actor. Their
defensive players will get an earful from the keeper if he or
she feels they've been too exposed.

So that's how it was. Here's a baseball video -- another one
I couldn't find at You Tube. The player, Jackie Bradley, Jr.,
avoids colliding with another player and catches the ball while
sitting. Below that is one where he rolls over and when he
comes up, he had the ball.
So that's how it was.
Not necessarily. That's how I saw it. Televised soccer is like
most other televised sports. You don't get to see the whole
pitch - - just a part of it. I don't know why they don't have a
small-picture-in-picture portion of the screen which shows the
whole pitch. I would have it from the goal-ends. One would see
all the players' positions and movements. One might also see how
the game is like a breathing organism - - expanding and
contracting as the game moves on. It has a "spine" too - - the
alignment from the center-backs through the holding midfielder
and up on through the attacking one and further on up to the
striker. One could see the formation the managers chose for the
game. FCBarcelona usually plays a 4-3-3 meaning four defenders
along the back, three midfielders, and three players up top.
They hardly change it since they are so adept at what they do,
but others do depending on the formation the other team is
using. As I said, it's somewhat similar to chess - - finding
the right movements to break through the opponent's defensive
system and there's nothing more exhilarating for me when it's
done cleverly to get a man or two through and an announcer knows
how to exclaim "He's in!" or "They're in!" meaning that they are
on the doorstep to scoring.

Somehow it's missing.

see what had happened prior to what was in the video.
As for points of view, have you heard about how lots of police
here in the US are wearing body cameras now? I think it safe
to predict that somebody someday soon will suggest body cams in
sports so you can see the game from the viewpoint of each
player. I don't think it would work very well with sports.
What do you think of this idea: You know how some television
shows in Canada are in both English and French, and you can
switch back and forth if you like? Why not do something
similar with the video part? Broadcast about four angles
continuously and let the viewer choose how he wants to watch
them? He could watch only one if that's what he liked; he
could watch two on a split screen with both being the same size,
or with one being a small insert inside the other; or he could
watch three or even four. He could also record all four! That
way if he wanted to go back to look at plays from other angles,
he could. Perhaps you could call or email someone in the
business to suggest this. You never know, someone might start
doing it and then it might catch on.
Years ago when I lived with my sister on N. West St., we had a
dear lady as a neighbor. She told me one day how she got a
company to put out colored lingerie. She was tired of white
this and white that all the time, so she took the initiative to
write the company she bought some underwear from to suggest it.
She got a pleasant letter back thanking her; and in a short
while, she saw they started selling lingerie in the lovely
pastels she thought would be nice. When other companies saw
how those sold, they also started selling them.
It might not work. After my neighbor told me, I heard how the
CBC was broadcasting some shows in French and English; and I
wrote letters to all three major networks suggesting they do
that in the US but with Spanish. I pointed out that the number
of people speaking Spanish was rising, and the network which did
this could pick up more viewers. I still think it was a good
idea; but none of them did it. My guess is they thought the
expense of translating and dubbing wouldn't have been
justifiable. Today, it wouldn't work since major Hispanic
networks exist now.
I do think it might be worth your while to contact some football
bigwigs. I'd think they'd love the idea. The technology is
already there for the television part since you can buy them
with split screens. Right now, the demand seems largely for
people who want to watch sports on one side of the screen and
something else on the other -- or perhaps two sports events on
both sides.
Somehow it's missing.
So it is! Some sorcerer
must have bewitched me into thinking I had it in the post when I
didn't. ???

There are people with amazing abilities (I think there is a
thread here on it). Its not surprising that some are able to
do things that don't seem normal, for not all peculiar gifts to
humans are of the physical nature, but those with those
abilities have to hide it somewhat due to how they would be made
into some governments lab rat.
