I find it a little strange for law officers to say that.

I am also puzzled that the police chief has recommended this.
Isn't it the case that most policemen never fire their guns in
the line of duty through most of the years of their service? It
would seem to be the case in the state that I live in.
In my state, which allows for open carry, for four decades, I
have only seen four individuals doing open carry. One man was
an ex-Vet who worked in a military surplus store and was a
supporter of the NRA. The other three were unknown to me but
appeared to have issues regarding inadequecy or anger
management, and most likely, were supporters of the NRA.
My sensing of how police patrol officers do their job, they
would not want people armed because it hampers their ability to
get control over a situation. A policeman needs to have control
when the police are called to a scene. If they do not have the
control, and are surrounded by armed people to whom they have no
assessment of, logically they run the risk of endangering
themselves and all others whom they are seeking to assist.
I figure, one of these days, I will participate in the community
program where a citizen can do a night or several nights going
out on patrol with the police. Of all of the participants that
I've spoken to, over the years when I worked as a motel Night
Auditor, I think that it would be interesting to confirm the
need of what they say about the need for patrol security.

weapons on your person or in your vehicle but none about open
carry. Thus it's legal; and I've never seen anyone carrying one
unless it was hunting season. The other day though some
people at Dominos said they saw a woman carrying some kind of
automatic firearm in the parking lot. They seemed to think it
was cool. I thought it was silly. I had to wonder about her
mental state. Yes, I suspected something like feelings of
inadequacy or anger. I just didn't "get it."

few guns as possible when they respond to a call. Seeing how
quick some are on the trigger, shooting people first and asking
questions later, it seems to me many police are nervous about
people with guns and see them as potential threats. To be
sure, if I had a gun and called the police about something, I
wouldn't want to be waving it around when they arrived. I
wouldn't even want to be holding it or have it visible. I would
want to look as harmless as possible.

I think they started something like that around here. While I
think it's a good idea, I can't see myself doing it.
The way I figure things, the police get paid to have guns to
protect me. Why should I pay them to protect me if they ask
me to do for myself. I also figure they may be able to do the
job better than I could myself if I lived in a town where
       everyone had a gun.
I'd rather rely on the police to keep law and order than have
everyone have his or her own gun.
I do like the idea though of criminals wondering who has guns
and who doesn't. If all the good people gave up their guns and
only the bad guys had them, I think we would see an increase in
       crime.

Responding to your last comment Kerry. Agree, If we all knew how
to shoot straight, ( I have never held one) and owned weapons, I
think crime may go down. Those perpetrating crimes are far too
       empowered.
Plus I am a believer in the right to own weapons. Disarming the
public gives all the power to the dictators.
We are already more and more controlled. Keep 'em guessing.
