       Songs I Don't Understand

I never understood this song; and today its strikes me as
slightly impious. I suppose they mean well, but I don't know
       about the message.

Here is another song I don't understand.
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaJrjt9mgeE
Are they saying that Christians experience unspeakable joy and
are full of glory? The lyrics say "it is joy unspeakable and
full of glory" -- but what is "it"?
I feel like the duck in Alice in Wonderland:
'I thought you did,' said the Mouse. ' — I proceed. "Edwin and
Morcar, the earls of Mercia and Northumbria, declared for him:
and even Stigand, the patriotic archbishop of Canterbury, found
       it advisable — "'
       'Found what?' said the Duck.
'Found it,' the Mouse replied rather crossly: 'of course you
       know what "it" means.'
'I know what "it" means well enough, when I find a thing,' said
the Duck: 'it's generally a frog or a worm. The question is,
       what did the archbishop find?'

Haha! I don't believe that you don't understand this song? Pull
       the other one.
It even tells us what the joy is all about!! I am sure that you
sung this in your younger years as did we.

[center]I have found His grace is all complete,
       He supplieth every need;
While I sit and learn at Jesus’ feet,
I am free, yes, free indeed.
       Refrain:
It is joy unspeakable and full of glory,
       Full of glory, full of glory;
It is joy unspeakable and full of glory,
Oh, the half has never yet been told.
I have found the pleasure I once craved,
       It is joy and peace within;
What a wondrous blessing, I am saved
From the awful gulf of sin.
I have found that hope so bright and clear,
       Living in the realm of grace;
Oh, the Savior’s presence is so near,
I can see His smiling face.
I have found the joy no tongue can tell,
       How its waves of glory roll;
It is like a great o’erflowing well,
       Springing up within my soul.

Is it a claim to have been glorified already, to have their
glorified bodies? They shine already with the brightness of
       the glory of God?
If someone is filled with the Light of God, does he think about
being full? Light is meant to go from one place to another.
It doesn't stay in one place.
Luke 8:16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it
with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a
candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
I like the other song, "This Little Light of Mine," better.
If one has the Light, he wants to share it -- so all can see the
Glory of God and live in His Light. He doesn't think that much
about how good it feels to be filled. Feeling too good about
it and about ourselves may have its perils.
Ezekiel 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty,
thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I
will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that
       they may behold thee.

       No, not at all!
It is just saying that we have 'seen' ( and felt) the grace of
       God in our lives.
I remember the day back in 1964 that I even used the phrase to
my hubby. "I met God tonight, I've seen the light." ( like we
say today " I had a light bulb moment") Things became clear that
       once were muddy.
" The glory" in this hymn means- Living in a realm of
glory..that we are of both of heaven and earth. Feet here, but
       heart in heaven.
I don't think anyone can get carried away much by "feeling too
good"...we all have bad days when we feel as far away and in the
dark, to keep us humble. The days of spiritual revelation and
closeness with the Lord are the glory days. We rejoice whenever
       we get them.
1391 dóksa (from dokeō, "exercising personal opinion which
       determines value") – glory.
/dóksa ("glory") corresponds to the OT word, kabo (OT 3519, "to
       be heavy").
Both terms convey God's infinite, intrinsic worth (substance,
       essence).
[1391 (dóksa) literally means "what evokes good opinion, i.e.
that something has inherent, intrinsic worth"
       ~J. Thayer).~
2 Cor 4.17 "For our light affliction, ( this body of flesh in
which we groan ) which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far
more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.."
That is the scripture God gave me every day as I watched my Dad
in his last dying days..knowing that he suffered in this flesh.
It gave me comfort, that his 90yrs which when dying seem such a
short life...had and was 'working for him' and he would soon 'be
       changed.' ( butterfly thing)

see people singing about themselves and how well off they are.

involved, I agree. If love is not there, it can be like the
pleasures of a harlot or the joy of drugs.
Ecclesiastes 2:1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove
thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this
       also is vanity.
Proverbs 21:17 He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he
that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.
Some people eat to feel good. So they say. But after they've
eaten as much as they can, they feel bad. Getting drunk also
       makes people "feel good."
I think of Our Lady of Babylon:
Revelation 18:7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived
deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith
in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no
       sorrow.
While not caring in the least about others -- indeed she
trafficks in the souls of men and is drunk on the blood. We
also see super rich people today who surely enjoy many
pleasures. . . while not caring about others, indeed some of
them made their money by exploiting others an d keeping them
poor. False religion can feel very good. I wish it didn't.
Wouldn't it be nice if false religion was so unattractive, it
       didn't appeal to anyone?
The idea of "pleasant" things is part of the theme of Genesis
       too.
Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for
food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be
desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did
eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Suffering in the flesh is not "joy unspeakable" and "full of
glory" to me (and I don't think the lyrics mean that) -- but
it works towards that end. I think it is correcting something
so that the joy can be made complete and is not a temporary
       "feel-good" moment.

Hi Kerry, I think we are 'saying the same thing' in different
       ways.
Often when we were in a meeting my old dad would not sing the (
many) songs that ask God to to make the singer happy, better,
more spiritual or anything. He felt those requests should be
made in private on your knees. He would only sing songs which
praised, uplifted, or glorified God. He used to say that
"singing in meetings is FOR GOD, not for us, or to build us
up...that is done on your knees in a heart to heart with Father
       God."

I'm sure you've seen the Gaithers' version of this song, and
your mentioning your father reminded me of it. I know, I have
strange thoughts; but when I saw this version, I wondered,
"Where are the children?" I didn't like what I was thinking,
that this was a lot of old people dressed up in their Sunday
best clothes, feeling good about themselves. But where were
their children and grandchildren? They don't take their
children to church, or are their children atheists on the way to
hell while their parents are rejoicing?
I'd like to think these people are like your father and their
children learn from them as you did from your father; but where
       are they in the video?

My understanding is ( and I love Bill Gaither and his big
       heart)
Many, many, of those in the singing congregation there, are dead
now. What those gatherings are for is to make video's, CD's and
DVD's. Many of those old gospel singers, some go back to the
       40's, had no pension.
These gatherings of all the singers started for the purpose of
getting money for them when they were old and sick. Old Jake
Hess was very sick for years. They look after their own.
They did a lot better than the group we were with for years!!
I had a big screaming fit ( to my shame) with the eldership. My
dad and mum arrived there after selling their house (= money)
They often asked him to give money to repair a tractor, fix a
truck, or buy some animals. By the time he was 82 he was all
tapped out of money. My old mum 6 months older than him, broke
her ankle slipping on the ice....she wrote to me that no one
came near their cabin, no one brought her food ( my dad did, but
it was always cold) no one visited her to see how she was.
I grabbed my friend and said "lets go". It was a 13 hour drive
from Edmonton to fort St John in BC. ( then add another 10 miles
       into the bush)
I marched in, did my yelling ..told them that they only cozy up
to the elderly while they have money, after it is gone they
       ignore them.
Many of the oldies there ended up in the town of Fort Saint John
       in old folks homes.
Obviously I packed a case for my mum , told my dad he could come
or not, ( he came two months later) and took my old mum home
with me to Edmonton. And enjoyed a couple of decades with her
and dad. She lived to 98.
So , do I like Bill Gaither and what he has done in providing
help for many, a Home for the old singers to live in when they
are 'passed it', and pensions for those who couldn't get by.
Many were only back-up singers, so were not among the 'rich and
       famous.'
I only said to Dave about three days back...that the big
downfall and failing of the group we were with, was that they
did not organise Homes for the regular old folk who had 'given
       all' for years.
If you were able bodied or monied you weren't looked after well
       when old and broke.

I thought that was a performance in some small church for some
people. I had the wrong impression of what was going on.
Gloria Gaither always appealed to me more than the others for
       some reason, not sure why.
Let me post a song by them that I love -- the lyrics and the
performance. It's about everything, not just about the good
times -- what do you do when you have those troubles?
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgeyYqaDroo
It is shocking how some religious groups appeal to the elderly
when they have money and then have no compassion when they need
something. I wish there was some way you could sue people like
that; but if the elderly give them money voluntarily, what can
       you do?
There is a nursing home that is operated by the Church of God.
The people there seem happy. One day I couldn't get in because
the door was locked or something. I think maybe at certain
times of the day, it's locked. But I buzzed and no one came.
An elderly woman walking with a cane came over and opened the
door for me. She had a grin on her face, and I smiled back.
She probably wasn't authorized to buzz people in -- and her grin
did look a little mischievous. What fun! Most of the people
       there seem pretty happy.
