At end of chapter on the “three poisons.......” slogan Pema
Chodron writes: “ This is instruction on how to turn un-wanted
circumstances into the path of enlightenment.” It reminded me
of a quote I read once in “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu (500 B.C.)
stating “The difficulty of the fray lies in making the crooked
straight. And in making an advantage of misfortune.”
Felt to me like related takes on the theme of reframing the
chaos and adversity of life???

And yet so much of what we label as misfortune is in our mind.
It is a concept of misfortune. Bringing this "to the cushion":
many times as I sit, I feel aches or pain and I have 2 choices:
resist the pain thereby giving the pain even more power, or
surrender to it by leaning in - surrendering by taking away the
story of my pain and looking at it dispassionately. "Now, how
does my body feel?"
Then, bringing this "off the cushion", the pain I feel toward
another person can be so solid, but the solidity of my disliking
or even hating him or her can be softened or eliminated by
recognizing the emotion, cutting the story line, feeling my very
real bodily sensation (e.g. "heat, tightness), touching my heart
and radiating light.
As Pema says, "You can't fake these things." Which means to me
that the practice is rooted in our body.
