THE DANGERS OF UNDERAGE DRINKING
Underage drinking is classed as anyone who is under the legal
age of their country, generally between the ages of 18 and 21,
who either regularly or occasionally partakes of an alcaholic
beverage. Statistics say that around 85 pervent of
children/teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 have tried
alcahol on at least one occassion. There are a number of
different factors that can affect these statistics, such as
Ethnicity and social or economic background, though there seems
to be little difference between whether its more common in girls
or boys.
LEGALITIES OF UNDERAGE DRINKING
The law on underage drinking is very clear. It is illegal to:
1) Sell alcahol to anyone under the age of 18
2)For an adult or older teen/young adult to buy alcahol on
behalf of a minor - known as a proxy sale.
3) For someone under the age of 18 to either buy or attempt to
buy alcahol.
4)For someone under the age of 18 to drink alcahol on licenced
premises UNLESS the child is 16/17 years old and with an adult,
in which case it is legal to drink, although not buy, alcahol,
along with a table meal.
5) To give a child under the age of 5 alcahol.
It is NOT illegal for:
1) Someone over the age of 18 to buy alcahol for a child over
the age of 16 on licenced premises if they are eating together
2) For a child between the ages of 5 to 16 to drink alcahol at
home
The consequences of getting caught drinking in public are the
confiscation of said alcahol, initially. Being cuaght three
times in public with open alcahol can result in a young person
being subject to a social contract, fined or even arrested,
leading to a criminal record. A Criminal record can have long
term effects on a young person, both by affecting future job
prospects and even making travelling tos ome countries, such as
sthe states problematic.
Health risks of drinking
There are many health risks aassosciated with drinking,
particularly drinking to excess. These include:
1) Difficulty in judging distances
2) Slower reaction times
3) Feelings of panic and anxiety
4) Possible impaired short-term memory and physical
co-ordination
5) Inability to concentrate
6) Lower inhibitions
7) Impaired judgement
8) Slurred speech and blurred vision.
These are just the immediate effects of drinking. Long term
Alcahol abuse can have major effects on long term pysical health
by causing your heartbeat to become irregular and it can lead to
permanant damage of the liver, stomach, pancreas and/or kidneys.
Alcahol also kills brains cells which can lead to
alcahol-related Dementia.
Young people when drinking are also more likely to over-indulge,
known as binge drinking. This typically means regularly
drinking more that the reccomended safe amounts, which for an
adult are 14 units per week, or around 6 pints of cider/glasses
of wine.
Regularly drinking more than that in a young person can lead to
alcahol poisoning, which sounds particlarly unpleasant not to
mention life threatening. There is also a chance of a young
person drinking this early to become adicted to alcahol, and in
some cases it can also lead them to becoming addicted to harder
drugs, although this isn't always the case.
Drinking in young people can also cause them to lose friends, as
those who themselves aren't drinkers fade away and those that
are either copying those behaviours or encouraging them in
others stay. It can lead tot he young person doing poorly in
school as the miss classes, turn in late etc, which will then
have a knock on effect to both future schooling opportunities
and job prospects.
When a young person is regularly drinking it can also lead to
tensions within the home. Becoming dependant on alcahol can
affect a young persons behaviour - they can become rude, surly
and or agressive, lashing out at those closest to them, either
physically or verbally. They become secretive, as they fight to
hide the drinking from those around them, and defensive when
challenged. This can lead to a possible loss of trust by
caregivers and is a very unpleasant atmosphere for other kids in
the home to be living with.
Alcahol is known as a mood enhancer, it can either make the
drinker feel euphoric or invincible or it could have the
opposite effect, in someone who is perhaps already leaning
towards depression it can enhance those feelings and there have
been cases where young drinkers have taken their own lives
partly because of this.
AlcaholLowers inhibitions, which means that - particularly,
perhaps , in the case of young people, who are maybe not as sure
of their convictions in things to begin with- People find
themselves in situations that they may not know how to get out
of - whether that is simply going along with behaviours that you
wouldn't have contemplated sober , to getting into situations
which are dangerous for you as an individual, Such as choosing
to get into a car with someone who has been drinking, or
allowing yourself to go off with with people you do not do well.
The most immediate effect of drinking is what is known as a
hangover. This is your bodies way of telling you that you drank
too much the night before, and comes with a range of symptoms,
such as a splitting headache, nausea, fatigue and basically just
feeling kind of miserable.
A Hangover is caused by the fact that alcahol causes your body
to pass more liquid than you drink, Causing you to become
dehydrated, and the constant peeing also causes your body to
lose salt, pottassium and magnesium, which your body basically
needs in order to function properly.
So in conclusion underage drinking is bad for you on a number of
levels. It can cause you to make poor choices, it can have a
physical and emotional impact on your live and the lives of
others areound you, it could affect both your school and and any
future job prospects and could ultimatly leave you with a
criminal record.
Also, hangovers just so arent worth it!

Iona thanks and hugs me and I pat her back with a chuckle.
"You're welcome, honey."
When Iona calls out that she's finished I enter the kitchen and
sit down to read what she has written. "Why don't you o ahead
and fix yourself some soup and crackers while I read over this,"
I tell her gently. "That'll be easy on your stomach and if you
can't finish all the coup you can stick it in the microwave for
later."
With that I start to read the essay. When I finish I look up at
my niece. "This is very good," I tell her and then ask, "did you
get the age limits and laws from the states or the UK?"

*Stands up from the table, stretching, and goes and makes my
favourite chicken cuppa soup when nanty says, figuring its
prolly a good idea. Glances up at Nanty biting my lip*
"I used the uk ones nanty I'm sorry was i supposed to use the
American ones?"

I shake my head when Iona asks if she was supposed to use the US
laws. "It's alright, Sweetheart, since you're under 18 anyway. I
was just curious because I saw an awful lot of 18 year old
references when in the US the drinking age is 21 unless you're
in the military," I explain. "But as far as this part of your
punishment we can consider it done."

part, not sure i could faced rewriting it again! Comin ng back
to the table with my soup i blow softly on it to cool it before
sipping at it slowly, watching Nanty to see what else is comin,
not likeing the "This part" part of her statement*

*Sips quietly on my soup and nibbles at some crackers, Staring
into space. It suddenly dawns on e to wonder where everyone
else is as the house has been wayyyyyyy too quiet today - not
sure whether this is a good sign or a bad one! Finishing my
soup and crackers i rinse out my mug and go try and track down
Nanty - or see if anyone else is here!*

As I'm in the living room trying to decide what to have Iona do
for the rest of the day,
I notice that the room is looking rather dusty...
"Hey there, Kiddo," I greet her. "Since you're finished with the
paper, you can dust the furniture for me and then vacuum,
please. After that, the dryer should be through running and you
can fold those clothes and put the next load in, please. By the
time you're finished doing those things it'll be time to start
supper."

knowing better than to even think about arguing! Frowns a lil
when you mentioned supper, remembering the last time you had me
attempt to make dinner*

"No baby," I answer with a smile when asked if I expect Iona to
cook supper on her own, "we can do that together. Just let me
know when you're through here and we can get started. Right now,
though, I need to go see about that water running upstairs!"
