Rubs your back some. "Iona, I am very proud of you for the way
you're handling this punishment. And I am going to hold you to
those promises. I know you're going to make mistakes, and
learning from them is all I can ask of you. My role is to help
you learn from them."
I let that hang in the air for a moment before gently pushing
Iona away to hold her at arm's length so I can look her in the
eye. "And now that you understand how your actions were wrong,
it's time to pay for them."

* Smiles a little when Nanty says shes proud of me, nodding when
she says about holding me to the promises i made in the letter.
Automatically flicks my Gaze away from Nanty when she starts
talking about how it's time to pay for alla things i did wrong,
before making myself meet her eyes again. Taking a deep breath
i let it out slowly.
"Yes Nanty"

Squeezes your hands. "Alright, out to the barn, young lady." I
point for emphasis and wait for Iona to move before I follow her
and point her to the bush that is appropriate for picking
switches.
Handing her my pocket knife I tell her, "okay, go and cut one
off and remove the leaves, then bring it to me, please. We'll go
into the barn and get it taken care of."

*Followin Nanty out to the barn and taking the knife she gives
me i heads over to the bush she points at and starts looking for
a switch. Eventually picking one that's reasonably long an
looks flexible but not thin nuff ta break. Cutting the switch
from the bush i remove all the leaves an any bits of twig before
taking it back an showing it to Nanty

I watch carefully as my niece obeys me and when she brings me
back the switch I take it in my hand. eyeing it carefully. I'm
after the feeling of it, not the potential of it to leave marks.
For this reason, I examine it closely and take the knife back
from Iona, using it to smooth out some of the nubs.
I take a breath and look at my niece seriously, but with a
sympathetic expression. "Iona I know it seems like it right now,
but this is not the only way I punish." I feel I have to say
that because the last time she got into trouble with me--over
running away from her father and stepmother--her fate had been
the switch as well.
Putting my arm around her to both comfort her and be sure she
goes where she needs to get, I lead her into the barn and turn
on the light.
"Alright, bare your butt and lean over that barrel, there."

*Hears the SWISHH of the switch and tenses slightly. The crack
of the first stroke takes my breath away and i GASP, trying to
stragten but prevented by Nantys hand at my back. Barely has
time to breathe before the next three strokes fall in quick
succession. moving my feet i shift my butt in an involountary
and unsuccessfull attempt to evade the switch. Sucking in a
breath i plant my feet again and grab hold of the barrel tight*
