quite the mess, haven't you? How much did you have to drink
tonight? What, specifically, was the alcohol in those tubes? Do
you feel sick from the smoking and drinking that you did?"

"Then i see no reason to delay your punishment," I tell her
simply as I get up from where I sit. "Come along, and bring your
tea."
"First, we are going to deal with the lying." I lead my niece
downstairs and into the kitchen, where I get out a legal pad and
a pen. "This is only the beginning, young lady," I assure her.
"Have a seat, while you still can."
On the pad, I write out instructions so that Iona has no way of
'forgetting':
1. Look up the word "lie" in the dictionary and write the
definition.
2. Look up "omission" in the dictionary and write the
definition.
3. Construct your own definition of "lying by omission" from
these definitions and write it.
4. Write out an explanation of why texting me about staying with
Jazzy was "lying by omission".
5. Write me a thorough apology, including what you did, why it
was wrong, and how you will avoid it in the future.
Showing this list to my niece I read each instruction aloud and
then ask, "Do you understand what you're being asked to do?"

*picks up my tea and follows nanty downstairs. Takes a seat at
the table and looks at the list Nanty is writing out, eyes
widening as the lsit goes on forever! Nods my head when Nanty
asks if i understand what it is i have to do.
"Yes Nanty"
*pulling the dictionary closer i start to look through it for
the defenitions"

I give my niece a kiss on the top of her head and go into the
living room to let her work in peace.

Dictionary Definitions
LIE
Ti lie is to speak falsely or utter untruth knowingly,as with
intent to deceive.
Ommission
The definition of Omission is something which has been left out
or excluded.
Therefore the definition of lying by omission would be to
knowlingly leave out vital information with intent do deceive.
TEXTING ABOUT JAZZY
Texting you about staying with Jazzy would be considered lying
by omission for a couple of reasons.
1) Vital information was omitted from the text regarding exactly
where Jazzy and i would be.
2) The text was sent with the intent to deceive you about Jazzy
and i's exact whereabouts , based on the assumption you would
assume we were staying at Jazzys house and would, therefore, be
properly supervised.
APOLOGY
Dear Nanty,
I am writing you this note to apologise sincerely for my
behaviour tonight. I fully acknowledge that i mae many bad
choices tonight, and though not all the choices were made with a
conscious decision to deceive, hurt or upset you in any way, I
accept that this doesn't excuse in any way the choices i made
and i accept full responsibility for that.
Tonight i Lied to you about where i was going to be.
I did not ask permission to be where i was.
I both drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes, both of which are
not only bad for my health but also illegal.
I placed not only myself but also Jazzy at risk by travelling to
strange places with people neither i nor you knew.
I caused you both upset at finding we were ot where we were
supposed to be but also hassle in the form of having to track us
down and bring us home.
By my behaviours and choices tonight, i have casued disruption
to how you may have planned to spend your night, as now instead
of spending your night doing something you enjoy, you have to
spend it in punishing me, which is something that neither you
not i enjoy.
I cannot guarantee not to make these same mistakes in the
future.
What i can promise is to try and think before i get caught up in
something.
I can promise that i will not intentionally set out to deceive
you.
I can promise that i will try my hardest not to allow myself to
get into situations where myself or others are in danger, and i
can promise that should i inadvertently find myself fin such a
situation that i will let you know before things get too far.
I can promise to always try my hardest to act in such a way that
you would want me to behave so that i am a credit both to you
and myself.
I know i will make mistakes, but i can promise to try and learn
from these mistakes and not repeat the same behaviours.
I an truly sorry for Lying to you. You trusted me and i broke
your trust, both yours and Aunt Kielys in encouraging Jazzy to
lie to her.
I know that i messed up big time tonight and i am sorry for
that. Please remember i love you with all my heart,

Having completed the list of things nanty wanted written, i
neatly stack the papers into a small Pile and flex out my
cramped fingers, grimacing slightly. Looking up from the table
i call out
"I'm finished Nanty"

Coming back into the room I go to the table and begin to read
through the stack of papers. Even I am surprised at just how
much is there.
I nod at the definition of a lie by omission and look up to give
my niece a smile and then I turn back to the papers.
When I'm through reading the heartfelt apology I put down the
papers and wrap my arms around my niece. "I accept your apology,
sweetheart," I assure her. "And I love you with all my heart,
too." With that, I kiss her forehead and smooth her hair.
