I have to smile a tiny bit when Iona says she doesn't get why
boys are a problem. "Because, sweetheart. You are too young for
me to feel like it's appropriate to be in unsupervised
situations with a boy. And the same goes for Willa. This isn't a
'you' thing, or because I think anything bad about you or your
ability to make decisions or take care of yourself. But it is my
way of trying to keep you girls safe. And as you grow up, and
develop trust with me, and as whatever boy happens to hang
around you develops trust with me as far as how he will treat
you, it can change. Until then, I won't allow it. Do you
understand?"

with boys, yet you don't supervise toni or kiki when there with
boys!"

Noting the frustration in Iona's tone and posture, I soften a
bit as I try my best to explain.
"Baby, I can't imagine a situation where Kiki would be alone
with a boy as it is because she is so young. And almost the same
thing with Toni. But also, sweetheart, boys their
age--especially Kiki's--don't have hormones. And at the same
time, with boys that age that they would be around I would at
least know of the parent or guardian. In this situation, I know
exactly nothing about any of the other kids you were with--boys
or girls--and that's an issue. I'm just saying boys right now
because that's who you were with, apart from Jazzy. But rest
assured, young lady, I wouldn't be pleased to hear about you
hanging around someone with access to alcohol and cigarettes,
regardless of which gender they are."

her leaning down and say, "sit back up please."
Once she obeys I continue, "you told me in the car that one of
you grabbed the cigarettes, and the other the alcohol. Both of
those items were stolen, correct?"

"NO! i PAID for the alcohol! i am NOT a thief! And i Don't know
where Jazzy got the cigarettes! i did NOT steal ANYTHING!"

that for a second, scooting back deeper into the window seat*

My eyes widen in surprise at Iona's reaction; I don't even have
time to be relieved that I had guessed wrong.
"Okay," I answer calmly, "I'm sorry, honey. I just know you've
got to be 18 to get them from the store." Pauses, Thinks. "Did
you not get them from a store, then? Where did you get them?"
