Showering and waiting for nanty

*heads on up the stairs and goes straight for the bathroom,
jumping straight in the shower, both to warm up from the cold
car ride home - ok, well , technically it hadn't been cold in
the car but wet hair and a goold old dose of nerves will chill
you to the bone! - and to get rid of the salt that dried into
my skin and was beginning to itch, Jumping under the spray, i
turn the water up as hot as my skin can stand and just stand
under the spray for a while, before finally washing the salt
from my hair and skin. wrapping myself in a towel and heading
for the bedroom, i pull out a pair of shortie jammies and blow
dry my hair before curling up in the window seat to wait for
nanty

Once we get home, I go into the kitchen to boil some water for a
cup of coffee. This is the first trouble I've had from Iona in
regard to rule breaking, and what an introduction she's about to
get!
As I take 2 mugs upstairs...my own full of (decaf) coffee fixed
with sugar and chocolate creamer, and Iona's with hot
chocolate/tea (whichever is preferred)...I pass by the other
girls' bedrooms and peek in on them, glad to know they're
sleeping.
A gentle knock is given on Iona's door and I peek in. "Iona,
it's Nanty. I'm coming in." Entering the room I sit on the bed
across from her and hand her her drink. "Sip that."
I sit in silence for a moment and then ask, "Why, Iona?"

*Sits up straight on hearing nanty at the door, taking the mug
of tea she offers and wrapping both hands around it as i take a
small sip. Glances down at the floor when she says just one
word "Why?"
Sipping at the tea as i think, still looking at the floor before
finally glancing up at nanty and sort of shrugging my shoulders
- not to be rude, but because i really don't know how to answer
that question.

I start to say something at the shrug from my niece, but then
stop short, sighing. Taking a sip of my coffee I try again.
"Iona Jo, I don't know you well enough to know whether this is
typical behavior for you or not. But I can tell you it's 100%
unacceptable. Today, you went to a concert without even so much
as a word to me--if it weren't for Jazzy having asked Kiely and
her saying no and telling me, I would never have known that--and
then you proceeded to lie to me." At this, I hold up my hand to
stop Iona from speaking. "And don't say you weren't, young lady.
Because you knew exactly what I would assume by the wording you
chose, and you intended it to be like that." I pause and then
ask, "how did you manage to get into the concert, exactly?"
Taking a breath and another sip of my drink, I continue, "you
went to a beach with boys neither you nor I know. You smoked
cigarettes and drank alcohol. And you can't even tell me why
you've made these reckless choices?!" I ask, my tone raising
slightly.

try an decide which question to answer first.*
"i bought the tickets from someone i knew outside the concert
hall - an an the alcohol too - i didn't know JAzzy had been told
already she couldn't go to the concert! I Didn't tell you about
the concert cos i wasn't planning on going to the concert an
when Jazzy suggested it it sounded like a good idea an i just
didnt think to call you an ask! And i can't tell you why i did
any of the rest cos i DONT KNOW!

I listen with a serious expression as Iona talks.
"Okay,' I answer simply about the concert, my tone still serious
but giving way slightly to sympathetic because of her tone.
"I'll give you that. You got into a situation that you didn't
know how to handle." I reach over to her now empty hand and give
it a squeeze. "Next time you're in a situation where you have to
buy tickets for something, know you need permission from me to
do it because I'm going to have questions about the environment
it's in. Deal?" I wait for a response from Iona before we move
on to the next bit.

*NOds at Nanty when she asks if we have a deal over asking
permission for things that need tickets, then realises noddings
not an answer.

Iona answers me and I nod, too. "Good. Okay, so now we need to
talk about the rest of this stuff. Iona...you made some really
bad decisions tonight. It's never a good idea to go off with
someone you don't know personally, and even if Jazzy knew the
guys, Kiely doesn't. And since they're the opposite gender
especially, it wasn't the safest of situations. I get that
you're 14 and you might want to start hanging out with groups
that include boys. But never will it be okay to do so without
your personally knowing them well beforehand and my knowing
them. And for now, until you're a little older, it needs to be
with an adult to chaperone. Is that clear?"

" Nanty i dunno anybody here yet howm i sposed a get to know
people if i DON'T hang out with them? and i am NOT a baby why do
i need a chaperone to hang with friends? even TONI doesn't have
to do that!"

"First of all, cool it with the attitude." I give Iona a warning
look. "I know you're not a baby, and I'm not trying to treat you
like one. You'd definitely know if I was, young lady. I get that
you're new here and I never said that you couldn't hang out with
people. At school, you can get to know people and make friends
and arrange outings outside of school and ask my permission to
participate. I know Jazzy will introduce you to her friends both
in and out of school, too. I am placing limits around how boys
can be involved. If you want to go out to eat as a group with
boys involved, that's one thing. But I better not ever hear that
you have one off with boys who are practically strangers to both
you and I like you did tonight again. You can like it or lump it
young lady, but if I were you I would not test it. You will not
be warned again."
