A thought . . .

I know there are some people who look for certain types of
connections between the old and new testaments so I thought I
would share my thoughts on Joshua and Jesus.
I know that Jesus is often referred to as Yeshua and was
reminded of this as I watched 'Risen' the other evening. I
decided to use Bible Gateway to look up references to both
Joshua and Jesus. The Orthodox Jewish Bible uses the name
Yehoshua for both Jesus and Joshua.
My thoughts led me to think about how Joshua led the Israelites
out of their captivity in Egypt, out of slavery and into the
Promised Land, the land flowing with milk and honey. But it was
just a matter of march in and settle down, they first had to
fight battles with the natives of that land for the privilege of
settling.
Jesus also leads us - his followers - out of a world of slavery
to sin and into a Promised Land, a land filled with good things.
And again we have battles to fight, spiritual battles, before
we can claim what has been given to us. And like the Israelites
we have God on our side, a God who is mighty and powerful and
loving.
This is probably nothing new to some of you but it's the first
time I've seen it.

Good one Pat, as with Joshua there is a need to see ourselves as
the Lord sees us. Back in the days of Joshua the pilgrims did
not see themselves any more than grass hoppers in the sight of
the people of the land and in their own sight, hence a 40 year
hiatus. Even today we must mix the word of God with faith and
believe who we are in the risen Lord before we can claim the
inheritance Jesus bequeathed to his Church.

it is written that the battle is won now, not sure how that is
supposed to fit into a new believer's belief system though

We still have spiritual battles to fight.

The battle is won in the sense that everyone on the Lord's side
in a battle is a winner. God loses no battles! The problem is
that most everyone, [me certainly] at times quenches the Holy
Spirit and for that moment is on the other side and therefore no
winner.
Remember Joshua and the children of Israel when they first
entered the Promised Land? Their first major "battle" was with
Jericho, but they followed God's instructions precisely and the
walls came down and the city was vanquished.
Shortly after that seeing that their next obstacle was the very
small [compared to Jericho] city of Ai, foolishly the
Israelites, including Joshua their leader, presumed that taking
Ai would be an easy thing. They failed to check in with God as
they made their plans and they unaware of the trespass of Achan.
Ai, the tiny little city, sent them quickly into retreat. They
really did not understand what had happened for them to lose
against such a seemingly weak foe.
It was only after they stopped and consulted with God that the
trespass of Achan was uncovered and God showed the way to defeat
Ai [=heap of ruins].
The children of Israel were like the new believer very confident
after that first major battle was won by God in him. When does a
person become so confident and experienced in battle that he can
be the Captain of his own ship?

The war is won but the battles still continue just like
conventional war - any God-opposed ideology once out of the box
will raise its head given the opportunity

People's problems arise from continuously changing sides. Even
when they know who the winner is, or is to be, they quench the
Spirit trying that lukewarm for a bit. At some point when they
continue to so tempt God, He is not going to give them again,
room for repentance!
