Circumlocution
By: Willie T Date: April 10, 2020, 11:11 am

How many here can admit to being guilty of it? And WHY do we do
it?

What is it?
It is the use of many words where fewer would do,
especially in a deliberate attempt to be vague or evasive.
I've noticed some of it often done here...…. and also, just the
opposite, the posting of only a few cryptic words — as though
other people should be mind-readers.

Perhaps we might call it 'beating about the bush' instead of
coming clearly to the point. Or even jargon.
Identifying the WHAT of an action still doesn't nail
down the WHY of doing it.
From many decades of facilitating group therapy sessions, I
suspect it is likely a fear of having to defend a too clearly
and definitively stated position. We all seem to like to try to
give ourselves some "wiggle-room" to get out of making an
absolute statement that may back us into an uncomfortable or
embarrassing corner.

Maybe they think they will be heard because of their many words.
Lol.

Willie, you are much too intellectual for me. I'd never heard of
the word.
I am sure my babbling often has far too many words...and
I always "think" that I have communicated what I am trying to
say...but half time I am sure what I think that I have said,
has not been said, and people misunderstand things I thought I
said !! ;D
So I am probably guilty.

We are all individuals and some people can get something across
in just a few words - like Jesus did. But then others can't
help taking a longer route to get to the place they're going.
There is often stuff on forums that I can't bother to read
because it is too lengthy and too stilted. Is that what you
mean.

I notice your definition does appear to be
taken straight from Google, is that correct?
I am prompted to ask why you were curious about who might be
guilty of using to many words? I also notice you did not answer
your own question, where do you stand Willie T?
