Ivor, thanks for that.It would make a good 'everybody join in'
thread if you reworded it something like 'Words of Wisdom'.
I remember three that I've picked up during my forum travels.
From Helen (not sure of the source)....."Convert a man against
his will, and he remains an unbeliever still".
From St Francis of Assises......"Preach the Gospel by all means,
but only use words as a last resort".
From Philosophollis....."the intent of a man's heart is better
discerned by an unbiased onlooker than by the biased discernment
       of the man himself".

I find it rather typical that a thread with the title of
"knowing God' would be based on the assumption that no one can
actually know God. Sign of the times.

       Yes Mike, and so true.
The actual phrase ( and my dad used to quote it) is:-
A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still"
       A search says :-
The phrase as it is written here appears in the section, "You
Can't Win an Argument," in Dale Carnegie's popular book, "How to
Win Friends and Influence People." But it went on to say that
the same phrase with a few different words....goes well far back
       in time...

       Good point!
But can we? We know our dad when we are young , as a child and
adult..so we can only talk at a child's level of
       conversation....
..and then all those years between ..
My dad died at 90, I was 56...our conversation and 'knowing' of
each other was obviously much deeper. But did really know "all
       about" my dad?
No, there was probably much he chose not to tell me about his
       life.
I believe that we are coming into the full knowledge of God.
We have seen Him, Jesus said "if you have seen me, you have seen
       the Father."
Paul at the later end of his life still said " That I may know
       Him....."
AS much as he knew Jesus Christ, he knew that he had yet a long
       way to go.
       Yes?
       blessings ...H

I found this interesting, so I went looking, and located this:
(It seems you are quite correct about its age, Helen.)
The origin of this old adage appears to go back a long time. So
long, in fact, that no one is really sure where it originally
came from. It also appears in many different forms in many
       different places.
Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797), the famous British writer and
feminist (and mother to the author of Frankenstein), included
the quotation "Convince a man against his will, He's of the same
opinion still." in the notes to Chapter 5 of her 1792 treatise,
A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. This adage is placed in
quotes, denoting that it wasn't original text, but without
reference to the source. So either she didn't know the origin of
this saying or she assumed that it was so popularly known that
       citing the source was unnecessary.
She might, however, have misquoted two lines from Samuel
       Butler's (1612-1680) ginormous 17th-century poem Hudibras. Part
III, Canto iii, lines 547-550 read thus:
He that complies against his will
Is of his own opinion still
Which he may adhere to, yet disown,
For reasons to himself best known
Butler might have penned an original thought here, or he might
have been borrowing what was already an old saying even in his
       time. We'll probably never know.

       Excellent find Willie.
       That was an interesting read.
One of those catch-phrases that never ages and will never die.

       Thanks... Helen .

In the end the judgment won't be so much on they who don't know
God, but rather they who say they know Him but don't. That is
if the words of Jesus have any bearing on this.
And they who falsely claim to know Him are indeed in the way of
the testimony of they who do.
