If Only We Had Listened...

Words of Wisdom from Sir Wilfred Laurier in 1907
I think that this is the best article on the subject that I have
read . . . . . . it was written over a century ago . . . .
-------------------------------
What Wilfred Laurier thought of the immigrants wanting to become
Canadians in 1907.
«First of all we must insist that the immigrant that comes here
is willing to become a Canadian and is willing to assimilate our
ways, he should be treated on equal grounds and it would be
shameful to discriminate against such a person for reasons of
their beliefs or the place of birth or origin. But it is the
responsibility of that person to become a Canadian in all
aspects of life, nothing else but a Canadian.
There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says that
he is a Canadian, but tries to impose his customs and habits
upon us, is not a Canadian.
We have room for only one flag, the Canadian flag.
There is room for only two languages here, English and French.
And we have room for loyalty, but only one, loyalty to the
Canadian people.
We won't accept anyone, I'm saying anyone, who will try to
impose his religion or his customs on us.»
Wilfred Laurier, 1907
Pity no one listened.

ABSOLUTELY;
no body is saying you need to change a thing ; but neither are
you required to come
you come to live among ;
not to colonize the land

Hmmmm- not sure I agree totally.
Have you ever looked further back in history and discovered what
we endeavoured to do when british citizens chose to send people
to different lands- we imposed our cultures/ ways and religions.
I am not saying that I believe immigrants should dictate - but I
do think we need to remember how things began - its seems that
its okay when we did it !
Just a thought ! LOL

On the contrary Rita I would say from the measure of your post
you do agree.
You express what was done by the British and it sounds as if you
are not in agreement of our ways being imposed on (for arguments
sake) India. If I am right and you see this as the incorrect
way for us to have behaved that would in fact endorse Sir
Wilfred Laurier in his understanding of how in this age one
country should receive immigrants from another.
It is plain logic is it not, if someone wishes to take another
country as their homeland then they need to become completely
dedicated to that new world both in ways, laws, speech and life
of that new country. After all that is what every true believer
is instructed to do by the word of the Lord, by book and by the
Spirit.

I think the way we did things was wrong. So to suggest the we
should have listened to him goes against what we did ourselves-
this man was applying it to immigrants going to canada, I guess
it would very much depend on whether Canada had other natives
there before those from the western world arrived. Would the
indians have already been there, if they were, then we did the
same, if they weren't and it was free open land, then yes I
agree.
Its more a case for hypocracy.
I believe that the way the native americans were treated in the
US and the aboriginies ( spelling ) in Australia have always
bothered me - it was their land first, but we went in and
eventually they were mariginalised.
In many respects the Muslims are infact endeavouring to do the
same here, some could say its poetic justice.
I am honestly not sure I am saying I agree or not, must admit to
being a bit confused !! LOL
( it doesn't take much ) !

I'm not sure I agree with Laurier and I'm not sure that is plain
logic.
I was intrigued by the idea that Canada has only two languages -
how did that come about? Whatever happened to the native
languages?
I am a British citizen. I am not completely dedicated to the
ways, laws, speech and life of this country. Why should I
expect people who come here and want to make it their hiome be
any more dedicated than me? That is not logical.
Also, I like the additional culture that other nationalities
bring to this country. Where would be be without our Chinese
takeaways and our Bengali curry houses! I love to hear
Nigerians pray is the way that only Nigerians seem to pray.
Goodness, please lets not make them all part of the knitting
group in conservative middle England churches.
That brings me to another point. As British people we a diverse
bunch. Not just across national boundaries, but across county
boundaries too. So when you say an immigrant should conform
completely to this nation's identity, which corner of the nation
are you referring to?
I think Britain is a richer country (and I don't mean
financially) because of immigration. Let's embrace it and make
it work for all of those who live here.
That's my uninformed two-penneth.

My wife and I recently had a two day stay in Greenwich using
tubes and buses.
Sooooo totally different from Norfolk where 'coloured' people
are in such a minority.
We found ourselves (as 'English whites') in the considerable
minority, especially with hordes of Asian school children
seemingly quite oblivious as to whether or not England was their
'homeland'. In fact I guess many or most of them were born here.
But the thing that struck us most was how pleasant, happy, and
peacefully they all were. The teenage Asian girls looked like
angels compared with the teenage English girls who were often
obese, tartish, and slovenly.
If they grow older and become aggressive towards us, who and
what is it that is at the root cause, I wonder?

I had thought that the fact that I was speaking from a spiritual
point of view concerning the new location that each born again
person is supposedly heading for was evident but I see it went
over a few heads , sorry for that confusion.
