       Thoughts from the Saddle
By: Ivor Date: September 28, 2014, 8:57 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
My Thoughts from the Saddle ................blog
I must be the only man in the land without a mobile/cell phone
therefore I choose to ride from my driveway on my motorcycle and
       go... Thats it!...... simples
I try to return often before midnight but on occasions not until
3.00 am if I'm riding back from the south we have a 24hr
truckstop off the M1 J35A that is a kind of mobile home trailer
its only a mile further to a 24hr McDs roundabout but I prefer
my tea in a big mug and I like the diesel smelling truckstop and
talking to the owner maybe because its a blokey kind of place in
this politically correct world we live in.
These rides in the saddle are selfish, I'm out of touch and off
the radar of everyone and everything but the rides are also a
place to contemplate and talk to God out loud. He shows me so
much about me and about others and such beauty as I ride along
and I'm not as in a car looking at the outside from the inside
but I'm there in the picture itself with the weather blowing hot
and cold, wet and dry and all the smells good and bad and
hearing everything including the rushing wind that comes with
       speed.
There is fear and adrenalin and satisfaction of sweeping bends
taken inch perfect clipping apexes. I'm drawn to water of any
kind, sea, lake, canal, even a stream. I sometimes have to ride
for half a day to get to myself and other times a 3 miles route
will do it just as good. The nearest sea is 88 miles away about
       1 1/2 hours ride
I am very lucky that my wife and I have both chosen to work 4
days each week with three days leisure but because I work night
       shifts 11.00pm - 7.00am I can even have a morning or afternoon
or early evening to do as I wish on a working day. Our Lord is
kind and he is gracious and provides sufficient for our needs

Ivor that sounded awesome, nearly got me thinking, oh for a
motorcycle but sanity prevailed and the invention of 4 wheels
seems so much better than 2 wheels,i bet you and James wear hats
alike, the thing that cured any mo-bike craving was at 15 at a
horse racing stable in Kent, taking a lift on a 1000cc Vincent
mo=bike on the seal road to Sevenoaks, then seeing the
speedometer over his shoulder, the bus was very pleasant on the
way home, saw all the countryside because you can have your eyes
       open,even the cigarette smoke(digger shag i think) wasn't that
bad, upstairs, better view and a lot quieter and my leg wasn't
burning, they have the exhaust under the bus,but thanks again for
       sharing that Ivor.

We've just booked a few days in Chester as our end of month
break. It is supposed to be similar to old York which we visit
often, with loads of history.... i'll find out at the end of the
       month

Ivor quote-: satisfaction of sweeping bends taken inch perfect
       clipping apexes.
That is such a good feeling, when it all comes together, the
bike and the rider are one.
The pity is it does not happen enough for me, only about every
five rides. The other rides I feel that my changing is rough I
don't do the checks correctly, the bike is not behaving itself,
       I arrive home unsatisfied.
Ever learning, one is never able to say "I am complete there is
       nothing left to learn".

At 50 I spent a year with the Institute of Advanced
Motorcyclists after surviving so long without extra training.
They were a bit Hi Vis and serious but the police bikers skill
and ability is astounding and learning their process was an eye
opener. I learned to criticise my own ride and accept that often
any ride over 20 mins didn't go without fault and after 50 mins
without a break my skill would deteriorate. There is no
substitute for time spent riding other than time spent riding
and some refresher course every few years
