Crawley Town
This evening we welcome Crawley from League 2 for a Vertu Trophy
game. Crawley have been a chaotic club but have shown signs of
returning to a more normal operation. Relegated last season,
they turned to talisman Scott Lindsay towards the end of that
campaign, but he was unable to save them from the drop. He has
not been able to organise a fresh start, and they currently sit
21st, having won only two games.
They had a typically busy and scattergun transfer window with
thirteen out and fifteen in. Many of their better players
departed, and their incomings are a mixed bag. Why they would
offer a contract to a 27-year-old Kyle Scott, who has spent the
last four years playing in the tier below the MLS escapes me, as
does the point of signing 34-year-old Scott Malone, in his day a
fine left back, but now? He’s played twenty minutes.
Centre backs Josh Flint and Charlie Barker have played every
minute in the league, with Dion Conroy just behind them. Since
they play various forms of three at the back and their cover is
Joy Mukena, Ben Radcliffe and Geraldo Bajrami who have barely
played. Harry McKirdy has started every game up from, usually
partnered by Kabongo Tshimanga. I would expect them to be
replaced by Ryan Loft and Kaheim Dixon. There are loads of
midfielders listed, so I have no idea who will be picked.
Coming shortly after the Cardiff match, this is a chance for
those who haven’t been regulars for Orient to show their paces.
Alfie Lloyd and Zech obiero are still out until November. If I
remember right, Ollie O’Neill is 2-3 weeks away, as is Joe White
while Michael Craig might be ready for the Doncaster match and
Tom James is out for a week or two. Combined with those who are
going to get a rest, the starting team more or less picks
itself. I expect Killian Cahill to start in goal. Dan Happe will
be wrapped in cottonwool, with starts for Jack Simpson and,
usually, Reg. This is a game for Tayo Adaramola at left back,
while Sean Clare is the last man standing at right back.
Something is seriously amiss. I think that we will see Jack
Moorhouse with probably Tyreeq Bakinson alongside him to provide
experience. Idris el Mizouni, Aaron Connolly, Dom Ballard and
Josh Koroma will be on bench warming duties. Up front the choice
of striker is between Azeem Abdulai and Sonny Perkins, but the
latter is the only guy who has played regularly off the right.
Demi Mitchell can play off the left or right wing so is a
starting possibility. Charlie Wellens deserves a start, but I
don’t know in what position – I think he would be better fit for
attacking central midfield than DJ. Lemar Gordon ought to get a
bench spot.
Even if we are going with a second eleven, we ought to have
enough to get past a poor Crawley side at home, even though it
is a low-key evening. Our defence ought to be able to cope with
a lower-level League 2 side although there are not obvious goal
scorers, aside from Wellens. This is a chance for at least some
players to show that they can perform in a competitive game and
put their hands up as decent options for Richie to choose. As
it’s the Vertu Trophy, it’s worth remembering that humility is a
virtue.
