An amazing scoreline to end 2019 as Aveley put six past Glenn
Tamplin's Romford.
It was set to be a really interesting game at Parkside to end
2019 as Glenn Tamplin's Romford came to town. The visitors had
21 days to prepare for the game after a few postponements in
December but that time did not seem to benefit the visitors at
all as Alex Akrofi scored four and Shad Ngandu bagged a brace.
We started the game well and took the match to Romford as George
Sykes had an early chance from a corner which was deflected wide
by Ryan Cresswell. Jason Raad then had a chance but his whipped
effort was blocked and deflected wide.
Just under ten minutes into the game and we took the lead. Great
work from Wyan Reid down the right-hand side as he got to the
by-line pulled it across to Shad Ngandu who applied the finish
for his tenth goal of the season. Aveley 1-0 Romford.
Five minutes after the first and we got our second of the game.
A long ball upfield by shad Ngandu was headed over his own
goalkeeper by ex-Miller Junior Baker for Alex Akrofi to race
onto and tap into an empty Boro net. Aveley 2-0 Romford.
Romford did have a couple of half-chances as Adam Cunnington had
the ball drop to him a couple of times in the area, the
former-Cambridge United man fired one over the bar and the other
a whisker wide of the left-hand post.
We almost bagged our third as Sam Mvemba and Wyan Reid combine
with the latter putting the ball just over the crossbar. In the
next five minutes, we had three chances which were so close to
making it 3-0. First was Alex Akrofi who just put it wide of the
target with a curled speculative effort. George Sykes and Shad
Ngandu each had efforts which were scrambled away off the
Romford line.
Two minutes to go before half time and we got our more than
deserved third of the match. A free-kick from Jason Raad was met
by the head of Alex Akrofi who managed to nip in just before the
keeper could punch it clear to find the back of the Boro net.

We started the second half exactly how we did in the first half
on top and dominant in possession. Alex Akrofi held the ball up
to George Sykes who saw his effort hit the post and bounce to
safety.
David Hughes was called into action as Jason Banton hit his
free-kick straight at Hughesy from 30 yards out.
Two minutes after that free-kick and we scored our fourth of the
game. A flick-on from George Sykes found Alex Akrofi who stood
up Ryan Cresswell, dribbled past him and fired past the Boro
keeper from a narrow angle for his hat-trick! Aveley 4-0
Romford.
The visitors had another couple of speculative efforts from
Mehki McLeod but none troubled The Millers keeper David Hughes
on his return from a couple of games out.
With 12 minutes to go and we made it five goals, a short corner
from Alex Akrofi to Jason Raad, with Jason Raad passing it to
Shad Ngandu on the edge of the area who curled it into the
bottom left-hand corner for his fifth goal in the space of two
days. Aveley 5-0 Romford.
Five minutes later and we made it six. Alex Akrofi found himself
some space in the Romford box and unleashed a fierce effort in
off the underside of the crossbar. Aveley 6-0 Romford.

Monday 27th January 2020 – BetVictor Isthmian League North
A string of missed second half chances – including a penalty –
cost Romford dearly as Hullbridge Sports went home with all
three points in Boro’s first ‘home’ game since mid-November.
Despite starting well and creating some early chances, Romford
looked like a side short of match practice, this being only the
side’s third game in seven weeks, and Hullbridge – who have
played eight games in that time – looked the more settled side.
Adam Morgan had the game’s first chance for Boro, winning
possession and driving forward before shooting wide after five
minutes, and then just a minute later a challenge on Mekhi
McLeod in the Hullbridge penalty area had Boro appealing for a
spot-kick, but referee George Warren was unmoved.
Archie Tamplin struck a free-kick straight at Hullbridge keeper
Lewis Greene, who then denied Morgan as he beat the offside
trap, but the visitors quickly served notice that they were not
there just to make up the numbers with a deep cross that eluded
everyone. Boro keeper Matthew Cafer, making his debut and
becoming the fifth keeper used during Glenn Tamplin’s reign as
manager, then had to be alert to punch away a fierce cross from
the right, at the expense of a corner.
And from that corner, Hullbridge took the lead as Romford failed
to clear and the ball fell kindly for Jamie Salmon to turn and
shoot home with 18 minutes on the clock. Hullbridge went close
to doubling their lead when Callum Thompson’s twenty-five yard
free-kick cannoned off the crossbar after 28 minutes, but Boro
were quickly up the other end and Sean Bonnet-Johnson, having
cut in from the left, fired a shot into the side netting after
32 minutes. Three minutes later and Mekhi McLeod was set up by
Malaki Toussaint, but saw his shot clear the bar.
Hullbridge went two up after 36 minutes as Daniel Walker
dispossessed Tambeson Eyong as he attempted to allow the ball to
run out of play for a goal-kick, and the Hullbridge forward beat
Cafer’s despairing dive to place the ball in the far corner.
The first action of the second period saw Greene in the
Hullbridge goal called quickly into action, when having first
parried a low shot, he got up quickly to flick the ball away
from Louie Theophanos as the Boro forward looked to convert the
rebound. Greene was powerless to stop Theophanos bagging his
first goal for Romford however, when Sean Bonnett-Johnson’s low
shot was deflected home by Boro’s former Kingstonian forward
after 52 minutes.
Hullbridge’s Joseph Wright really ought to have done better with
his 56th minute shot that was way off target from a good
position, but Hullbridge had the ball in the net shortly
afterwards, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul.
Theophanos then set up Adam Morgan, whose shot was well saved by
Greene, and then Bobby Mills, a half-time substitute for
Toussaint, shot narrowly wide after 68 minutes, as did Morgan
four minutes later.
Romford were handed a lifeline after 73 minutes. Archie
Tamplin’s ball into the box was collected by Theophanos, who was
bundled to the ground. Adam Morgan stepped up to take the
penalty, but his shot hit the outside of the post.
Greene made two top class saves to deny first Junior Baker and
then Ramone Rochester, although quite how Rochester’s effort hit
the keeper rather than the back of the net remains a mystery and
rather summed up Romford’s night in front of goal.
Gibraltar international Matthew Cafer, who had been largely
untroubled in the second half, made a fine save to deny the
visitors a third goal, but despite further Romford pressure,
they were unable to find an equaliser and remain rooted to the
foot of the table, still nine points behind Felixstowe & Walton
United, and with one of their games in hand gone.
