Betrayal: A True War Saga
Part 4
Helios awoke on the floor of Vitharr's shop his memories fully
returned to him. He felt Uriel’s power and thoughts mix with his
own.
He was…wait…who was he?
The truth hit him in the gut like a pissed off Wookie. He was
Helios Pendragon. He was a Jedi infiltrator. He hadn’t turned
against Erenim. He hadn’t turned against Jarvan. He was still a
servant of the Light.
He felt completely nauseous as he processed his thoughts. What
would Erenim think of him once he heard the news? Did Erenim
know this was all a ruse? Had Jarvan told him?
The Grandmaster…holy shit. The Grandmaster had enlisted him on
this adventure. This was the most dangerous mission he’d ever
gone on and he was surrounded by enemies and monsters. He needed
to get a grip and get on his feet.
Helios tried to stand and staggered a couple of steps. Michael
grabbed Helios by his arm to steady him.
"That was a nasty fall, Helios, are you ok?" Vitharr asked
Helios.
Helios not wanting them to pry too much into his fainting spell
told a half truth. "Yea just a little hungry is all."
The sabersmith looked concerned but nodded.
"Well, let’s go get you some food then, Helios." Michael said
leading him to the door. "Don't want you passing out during your
trial."
The moment Helios was out the door the sound of the propaganda
flooded his ears demanding his attention.
"Follow the True Path!" Blared a speaker Helios spotted on the
corner of a nearby building. "Only Anubis D'sade can save you!"
Helios Felt Uriel’s mood darken. <Uriel what's wrong?> Helios
thought.
<D’Sade…I have heard that name before,> Uriel said. <It’s a name
I had hoped never to hear again.>
<Why?> Helios asked. <Why does that name provoke such a strong
response?>
Helios could feel the struggle in Uriel’s thoughts and emotions.
He could something resembling fear there.
<Helios Pendragon, I am older, far older than you may realize.
Older than any of the Jedi Order.> The thoughts felt sad. Sadder
than just about anything Helios had ever felt from the spirit.
<I cannot tell you everything now, so don’t even ask. But I can
tell you this. Once I served a King. A being more powerful than
you can imagine. I was one of his chosen, a sacred member of a
trusted counsel. We served the greater good of the galaxy not
unlike the Jedi. Then we fell to ruin.>
Helios’ mind raced at this information. <How come you never
mentioned this before?>
<What benefit would the long dead past be in the here and now?>
<A lot, considering you just hinted at a connection between you
and the True Sith.> Helios hesitated to ask the next question
but he knew he had to. <How did your Sacred Counsel fall into
ruin?>
<We were betrayed.>
Figured that’d be the reason. <And the betrayer…it was Anubis
D’Sade?> That didn’t seem likely. While the True Emperor had
been reported as powerful, it seemed unlikely he could be as old
as Uriel.
<No…and yes…>
<Well, I’m glad you cleared that up for me,> Helios teased.
<Glad I have you around for clarity.>
<Jest all you want, Helios Pendragon,> Uriel lamented. <But I
know the name D’Sade and I know that he was our betrayer. He is
connected to Anubis D’Sade, but in some way I am not as of yet
sure.>
The streets where crowded with people going about their day.
Michael started off and Helios followed. More propaganda was
shouted from speakers and every wall had a poster vilifying the
legion or Demanding you to follow the True Path.
After 10 min of walking Michael led Helios into a diner. A large
sign on the front read Mary’s.
Helios stepped into the diner, letting the door shut behind him
cutting off the noise of the busy street. Mary’s diner had
several tables and booths some of which were occupied by other
customers. A couple of droids waited tables and would whisk in
and out of a door with food and taking back dirty dishes.
"This way," Michael said to Helios leading him to a booth. "I
always sit here" He said taking a seat. "Don't worry Helios it’s
on me, Legion Credits will do you no good here." He said while
waving at Helios to sit across from him.
Helios sat across from Michael and as he did a screen in front
of him lit up showing him pictures of food. Helios swiped the
screen and selected a few things that looked good to him.
"I know that order!" A feminine voice yelled from the back.
Out from the same door the droid used emerged a slender woman
with long red hair.
"Michael!" she squealed running to him arms spread wide.
Michael stood to receive her embrace. After a moment the two
began to talk. Helios Left alone to his thought at the moment
felt a wave of guilt wash over him. His master and his family
now thought he had betrayed them.
Canderous would be crushed and Aurora and Gideon where so
impressionable at this point of their training what negative
effects would this have on them.
What if he failed in his mission? Would Jarvan ever reveal the
truth? Would the Pendragons always believe he had betrayed them?
Would his apprentice think the worst of him?
Just as the guilt was about to make him sick Uriel’s voice
penetrated his thoughts <Helios calm yourself Michael is trying
to get your attention>.
"Huh?" Helios said looking up a Michael.
"This is Mary" Michael said introducing him to the red-haired
woman. "She owns and runs this place. She makes the best food
around."
"Oh, sit down and stop embarrassing me." She said giving Michael
a playful shove. Michael pretended to sprawl in his seat.
Looking to Helios, Mary said. "He's always doing that hyping
people up for my food! Really, Michael, you should let it speak
for itself."
"Now Mary you know the whole city loves your cooking." replied
Michael. "What would this city do without you?"
"Starve." She said with a grin on her face.
"Nice to meet you, Mary." Helios said. "I'm Helios pen.. I'm
Helios."
Helios felt a wave of guilt wash over him again. It must have
shown on his face as well.
"Have a rough past eh, Helios.” Mary replied. Helios nodded in
acknowledgment. "Well don't worry, we all have something in our
past we would like to do away with."
Suddenly a droid approached the table with their food. Mary
placed the plates in front of them. "Now you boys enjoy your
meal and I’ll be back when you’re done!"
Helios dug into his plate eating scrambled eggs and thin strips
of meat that reminded him of bacon back on New Avalon. Michael
and Helios spent 30 min eating and chatting with Mary. Helios
really like Mary and she definitely liked Michael.
After a while Helios followed Michael out of Mary’s and back
into the streets.
After some time, Helios and Michael reached a black building
that appeared to be made of Glass.
"Here we are." Michael stated. "Let’s find out if you have what
it takes to leave the Legion behind and become part of the
Hellfire Tribe." He then motioned for Helios to enter the
building.
<This place has an ominous feeling to it, Helios Pendragon,>
Uriel warned.
<Yeah,> the Jedi coughed internally. <No kidding.>
Out loud he asked Michael, “So, this is where the Trial is,
huh?”
Michael smiled in a warm manner. “This is the start, Helios, the
start of your journey. This is where you take your first steps
upon the True Path.”
Helios had to remember to play along.
Michael’s smile was the creepiest thing he’d seen in a while.
“Uh, yeah. Can’t wait to walk that True Path.”
The Sith raised an eyebrow at Helios’ delivery. “Are you
alright, Helios?”
<The Sith suspects our true reason for being here,> came the
urgent tone of Uriel. <Tread carefully, young Jedi.>
“I am fine,” Helios lied. “I just…I dunno…I suppose I’m worried.
I know you guys are taking a big risk bringing me into the
Hellfire Tribe. I want to believe in the Dark Side, I want to
believe in Anubis. But it’s hard to let my old life go, I
guess.”
Helios could see Michael’s expression go from worry to genuine
empathy. He’d said the right things.
“Of course,” Michael said nodding. “Of course. Letting go of
your old life is always a burden. The True Path is not for
everyone, not for the weak or the unfit, or the morally
inferior. No, the True Path cleanses us of our weaknesses and
some cannot stand once those deficiencies have been burned away.
But you are strong, Helios. Strong and waiting for a new life.
Once you begin the True Path, you’ll see your old life as a
waste. You belong to the Hellfire, Helios. You belong to Anubis
D’Sade.”
He guided the man forward. “Come, let me show you what I
mean.”[attachimg=1]
