Anti-Teamflash and NoBlock Manifesto
By: Jazzly Date: May 26, 2020, 6:13 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi! Jazzly here, I'm a fairly active member on the server and
I'd like to suggest 2 additions to the server which I think
could improve the experience greatly and I will defend why. All
the reasons I point out below make for a worse experience
whether that be dying repeatedly from bodyblocking or getting
teamflashed while peeking a corner leading to you dying.
Anti-TeamFlash
Firstly I'd like to suggest some kind of Anti-TeamFlash plugin
to be enabled on the server. There are a few reasons why all of
which I will highlight.
1. **** Players
Now what do I mean by **** players? Bad players in most
semi-casual games will never (usually) harm my experience
playing the game, Sure they won't get many kills or do much of
note at least I can ignore them and just play my own game. Not
on LazyRebels though! The countless amounts of times I've been
team-flashed by a poorly thrown nade round a corner or my team
have flashed a site that I've already taken. Bad players or more
specifically bad flashes can worsen my experience as I feel like
I'm being pretty much killed by my own teammates when they throw
these bad flashes. It can make taking/defending large, open
sites unbearable as I'm team-flashed for 99% of the time I'm
trying to do something. (Yes It is pretty obvious when a flash
is a team-flash and an enemy flash)
2. Amount of players
This is also something I will hit on later but for a different
reason. At peak times most matches will have 10-15 players on
each team. Each player can buy a maximum of 2 flashbangs
(although alot of people don't buy flashes at all).
For example say I'm defending B Main on dust2 with 4 teammates,
that means there could be 10 flashbangs between me and my 4
teammates all trying to hold B. With my expert timing software a
full-flashbang in CSS will take about 4-4.5 seconds to fully
recover your vision (lets say 4 seconds to be nice) Each round
lasts 2 minutes (120 seconds) and it takes about 10-20 seconds
to get to B bombsite from CT spawn (average it out to 15s) .
That means out of the 105 seconds a round will usually last
(take away the time it takes to get to the bombsite) I could
spend up to 40 seconds of that time defending the bombsite
team-flashed trying to hold the tunnel or 38% of the entire
round with my screen as white as the server demographics (This
doesn't even include enemy flashes but that's not the point of
the post) This can make defending sites with alot of team-mates
annoying as **** as it pretty much forces me to stick my head in
the ground like an ostrich until my team-mates stop throwing
their inventories at the enemy team. On some maps this can make
trying to defensively hold sites with scout impossible as I will
constantly have to back out or unscope from being teamflashed
(therefore giving up valuable angles). You can see how this
could get exponentially more annoying with more and more players
online.
NoBlock
Secondly I would like to suggest some kind of NoBlock to prevent
being bodyblocked by teammates out of spawn etc.
1. Amount of players
Told you we would come back to this. With the size of the maps
being relatively small compared to the amount of players on them
you can see how it could quickly become a problem that players
will accidentally block each other out of certain
positions/spawn. Butting heads with a player for 5 straight
seconds like 2 bulls locking horns at the start of every round
gets really annoying, really fast. Or trying to jump up to
positions to get better angles but your team is just preventing
you from doing so. This one is much more simple but it would be
a very nice QoL change to install some kind of NoBlock plugin to
make getting out of tight spawns slightly easier, which bring me
onto my next point.
2. Small Maps
Alot of the maps in rotation on LazyRebels are usually made with
a 5v5 player count in mind meaning that spawns can sometimes be
incredibly tight with alot of players all spawning practically
on top of each other. This makes navigating out of spawn pretty
annoying meaning that alot of the time I will get to bombsites
late therefore meaning T's can just push for free and easily win
the round and vice versa.
Conclusion:
All of the problems mentioned above seem to lead to alot of
players adopting a baiting playstyle in which you wait for your
team to all run in and die to clean up the scraps. This is
because when your team is dead you don't have to worry about
their bad flashes or bodyblocking you into death. Without these
things enabled I think it could lead to better gameplay and a
better experience for good and bad players alike. All these
reasons (IMO) lead to a worse experience overall and can lead to
my death a large portion of rounds

Thanks, Jazzly.
Its great to see you active within our community and your input
is helpful. I would ask you to remember that our server is only
a few months old and we are still finding the configurations
that suit us and our identity the best.
What is for us a priority, is the community side of the game.
There are copious games with copious servers that are
competitive and somehow we have all ended back here, in a
community.
We have a server which is home to people of varied degree of
ability and skill and as far as that goes, our admins have done
a sterling job. You are right however that we have more to do.
While we take onboard your suggestions may I make a suggestion
of my own which may help alleviate some of your frustrations and
help you enjoy the game better. You are a competitive player
with a wealth of skill and ability, why not share your knowledge
with some of the more noobie type players? The very worst of us
(maybe me lol) you could see as a project, improving the game
play and giving you a purpose.
Regardless of the solution you find I am grateful that you are
with us and we hope you continue to enjoy the community of
players here.

I've played on a few servers recently that had an flash
punishment for team flashing, I think I I got slapped for 10 or
20hp, I wasn't sure about it for the first few rounds, but then
I got used to it, and it definitely made me think more about my
throwing!
I think team flashes and blocking are the two most frustrating
things playing css, and I'm terrible for doing both of them as
well!
Might be worth trialling some sort of anti flash plugins, just
to see if it improves anything.

While I don't think slapping players for HP is a great idea. I
definitely think we need some kind of thing like it.

Good points but I really think it's fine as it is, team flashes
happen. If someone is team flashing on purpose and repetitivly,
the admins can handle that.
Likewise with no block, if you turn no block on, you also need
to consider turning team damage off before things get more
confusing. And team damage is on for a reason, no team flash
and no team damage really impacts the pace and feel of the game
more than people realise. Also how do you make great boost plays
with no block on? :(

Of course, players should not teamflash. But reducing the number
of players I see as a clear deterioration. I prefer more
players, greater community and more chaos. I dont belive in
trying to steer players to a certain way of playing. Dont smoke
there, dont flash there etc was common on UKCS. Different
playing styles contribute to the team-building and the server's
greatness.
I think admins do a fantastic job.

Could a compromise be to test out no block and (if one exists)
an anti team flash mod?
It wouldnt hurt to see how much of an impact it makes and review
after a month.
Agree with Helton though, never look to shrink the size of
players on the server... maybe just look at what maps get played
when. (Im guessing the mods can't change what maps can appear in
the votes depending on the current player count). when the
admins are on though Im sure they know which maps to put on etc
etc
