It is an assault on one's Free Will, Tillamock, when a group of
individuals say they are doing one thing and then to another.
Hypnotising a person without their prior CONSENT is an assault
on one's Free Will. Doing "group therapy" and thought control
without INFORMED consent is an assault on one's Free Will. The
only "education" one can get from Landmark/EST is that there are
people willing to take your money under any pretext - buyer
beware is what people learn when they have had the misfortune to
       get sucked in by Landmark/EST.

If you feel that a weekend seminar is hypnosis, thought control,
and an assault on free will, then there are many things in our
daily lives that would also meet your criteria; commerical
advertising, for one. The North Face (the outdoor store) wants
to enable me to "Never Stop Exploring" and fill my head with
supporting imagery at every opportunity. They have presentations
and seminars of various mountain sports - all of it designed to
"suck me in" get my money. My criteria is this: In order for a
pitch to turn the corner and become suspect, there has to be a
measurable effort to take away my ability to reject the pitch.
In my opinon, Landmark doesn't come close to meeting this
       criteria.

I think Sophie was onto something with the writer, Karin Badt.
If Karin is truly, as she writes, "... intrigued to see what I
could learn about myself. ... someone was finally telling me how
it was." ? She does not see the possibility in Sophie's
question, ""Tell me Karin, do your friends run away from you?"
or even how her own answer supports a "yes" when she reveals, "I
quickly ran through my appallingly brief list of friends and
wondered if she was right. Was I self-righteous? Had people run?
If they had, I concluded, I would not even know: they were long
gone down the jogging trail." "No," she responds, closing down
       the exploration.

what about "exploration" of the question Karin asked about
       Ghandi and King?

My experience with the Landmark Forum was very positive--In
fact, it's what inspired me to get involved with politics in the
first place. My reasons for doing the course mostly had to do
with my career, but one of the things I saw during the weekend
was that I really only cared about myself--I was pretty cynical
and resigned about the world and politics, and had given up
trying to do anything about it. I got inspired during the course
to take some action and took on having a lot of fundraisers for
Howard Dean (this was back in 2003). I took from the Landmark
Forum the idea that the world wasn't going to change on its
own--I had to do something about it. Now, every time I see
something crazy happening in the Bush administration, I don't
get depressed, I look to see what action I can take that would
       actually make a difference.

A former friend of mine went through Landmark. He claimed to be
happier for it, and I can't judge that, but where any vague
curiosity I had about them died was when he swore that using the
techniques it taught let him change his hair color by the power
of his mind. I didn't see a difference, but he swore there was
one. The magical thinking inherent in Landmark is far too much
fluff on top of what could be a truly useful tool. The fact you
got something out of it without falling for it is proof enough
       of that.

It always amazes me that so many people -- especially women --
will go to great lengths and pay high prices to seek out gurus
who will humiliate and verbally abuse them. (One is tempted to
volunteer to do it at half price.) Some (free) advice for these
       pathetic folks: Get a life.

That was funny (really), too bad though, that getting a life is
just what they can't seem to do. They need help. They were
supposed to have learned how to see through this crap in school.
These skills could be taught in middle school, actually a course
called "How to Get a Life" might be a good idea.

Great article. I thought you were going to slam the whole thing
because of the one serious flaw you mentioned. I'm usually wary
of any person in authority refusing to convince with solid
arguements for their point and instead turning an honest
question into an excuse to insult the curious poser of the
       question.

the landmark forum is a real dangerous organization. i don't
know if i would so much call it a cult as just a money making
enterprise that relies on destroying people's lives and
       emotions.
there's a great french documentary on it, worth looking up.
       thanks for this article.
