The Highlord's Court
By: rclemens86 Date: September 23, 2022, 1:34 pm

Soaked boots sloshed through the rain and mud, the long black
cloak billowing in the breeze. A hand pressed through the veil
of thick brush and trees, eyes looking in all directions to make
sure no one saw. The figure pressed through and stepped into the
other side. The rain still beating down, and the darkened sky
ominous of the looming storm. With cloak and hood soaked
straight through, the figure disappeared in a light cloud of
gray, misty smoke.
Moments later, the dark cloak appeared outside of a grand city
sparkling in the night. Violet eyes glistening from under the
hood as the figure took sight of the city and it's goings on.
Slowly they moved toward the inner city, still shrouded in the
dark hooded cloak, and kicking up water from road under foot.

At the outskirts of town, a woman was sitting behind the glass
counter of a metaphysical shop. The sign above the front door
read "Celestial Plane". She had thick hair the color of dark
caramel that fell in waves to her hips, pulled back into a
braid. Her eyes, one green and one blue, was skimming over the
pages of a magazine. She wore an olive colored skirt that fell
just slightly above her thighs, cream colored thigh-high knitted
stockings, a matching color oversized sweater, and brown calf
high boots.
She let out a bored sigh, looking up at the clock. "Only a
couple more hours until closing," she muttered to herself.

The cloaked figure walked slowly through the city streets,
passing by it's many little shops. It was the perfect night to
blend in, the dark cloak shielding from the rain. The darkened
figure slowed as it turned onto a small street of smaller, and
lesser known shops. Most of them dim in the dark of night,
having closed their doors already. These walks always did last
hours at most. Exploring the city was a weekly happening, to see
what was on the other side of the veil.
The streets were mostly emptied now, coming to the earliest of
the late part of night. The rain slowed to a light rain and the
world around was a little quieter. Soft pitter patter of rain on
the cement now. A car turned onto the street, it's headlights
showing the strong jaw and perfect shape of a beautiful man's
face behind the cloak. He squinted his eyes and turned his head
from the beam long enough for it to turn and pass, then leaving
him in the dark of night again.
He continued walking, seeing the lights of one shop down the way
spilling onto the sidewalk. Slowly, he made his way towards it.

The woman gave up reading the magazine after a bit and sighed,
pushed her stool away from the counter. She slipped off of it,
gliding over to where the herbs sat on a shelf, all neatly lined
up. The glass jars were rather large, and had a scoop inside.
She picked up some baggies, and started pouring scoopfuls into
them. Angelica root, basil, bay leaves, blessed thistle; mostly
for protections and cleansing, but also some for prosperity. She
sealed the baggies and set them on the counter, moving over to
the section containing tea leaves and flower buds. Again, she
pulled out some baggies and began scooping various buds.
"Always so slow on these night," she muttered, tucking a stray
strand of hair behind her ear. She glided back to the counter
and set those baggies with the others, before deciding to start
her closing list early. She grabbed the broom and dustpan from
the corner, stopping to put some music on her phone, and then
began to sweep.

As he drew closer to the lit window, he was quickly passed by a
stranger who bumped his shoulder on the way by. They didn't
stop, but just kept going, running passed the lit window. He
grumbled and continued on, stepping into the light of the
window. He looked inside, his eyes looking over all of the
things. Crystal displays, and a wall of herbs, another wall of
tumbled stones. Further back, bookshelves filled with leather
bindings, paperback, and the hardcover bindings as well.
His eyes captured the female figure inside, but he took no
immediate interest in her. Quietly, he continued to stand,
looking inside from out in the rain and darkness. He simply
admired the stores wares, his violet eyes glowing from under his
hood in the lighting from the window display and his lower
facial features reflecting back in the window.

"Murphy, Murphy, darlin' dear; I long for you now, night and
day. Your pain was my pleasure, your sorrow my joy. I fear now
I've lost you to health and good cheer," she sang as she swept.
When she turned to sweep along the window, she glimpsed the man
in the cloak and gasped, startled by his staring presence.
"Jeezus," she muttered to herself. "Calm down, Anya.. he's
probably just curious about the store.." She took a breath and
then smiled, eyes sparkling, motioning for the man to come in.

He had noticed her as she approached the window, and he watched
her startled expression. As she motioned for him, he looked at
her, throw the window pane, over the distance of the window
display, and straight into her eyes.
'What are you doing, Em?' the hoarse voice at his left ear
whispered. He didn't answer it, but kept looking at the woman,
his stare lasting seconds now. 'Just go in there already.' the
voice grumbled.
Slowly, he started to walk toward the door, lowering his eyes
from her. The door slowly opened as he stepped in front of it,
and he quietly stepped inside.

She felt an odd sensation as the man entered the store;
something like warmth combined with an odd tingling feeling,
much like the one she got when she smoked herbs. But this time,
she didn't really feel light-headed; instead she felt drawn to
this man. For that reason it almost put her on edge. She put the
broom aside and fumbled to turn the music off. Once she finally
closed the music app, she turned to him with that same sweet
smile.
"Welcome to Celestial Plane. Is there anything in particular you
were interested in?" She took note of his rain-soaked garments,
gaze lingering a little in awe of the height of this stranger.
She tried hard not to stare.

Unlike her usual customers, he did not lower his hood. But his
violet eyes were still focused on her. "Nothing in particular."
he spoke softly, a soft voice with the echo of strength behind
it.
'You are so boring, I swear.' the voice grumbled.
"You are alone here?" he asked quietly, averting his eyes into
the shop once again.

Now that question definitely made her uneasy, She shifted her
feet slightly, hand rubbing the opposite wrist as she nodded
slowly.
"Yes," she murmured, trying not to show the feeling she felt. "I
own this store, so I'm the sole employee."
Habitually, she started to nibble on her lower lip; she had a
full, sweet looking mouth (or so she had been told), and often
was mistaken for being seductive when really she was nervous.
