"Oh." she nodded, slowing down and turning into a localized fast
food joint. The drive thru was backed up a bit so they had to
sit and wait. She glanced over at him a moment and involuntarily
licked her lips and slightly bit her lip. "You're one of the
pilots aren't you?" she asked, bluntly.

The look on his face changed and became unreadable. "Yeah..." He
said softly. "Or at least I was. But that was a long time ago."
He looked out the window.

When his expression waned she slouched a little into herself.
"Oh, sorry. I wasn't aware it was a taboo conversation. Please
pretend I never asked." She moved up in a line a little bit and
rolled her window down a couple of inches as she was feeling
enclosed now.

He sighed and rubbed his face, feeling like a bit of an @ss now.
"Its not taboo," he replied. "Its just something that never
really comes up with anyone but my fellow pilots and soldiers. I
was kind of taken back that you mentioned it."

She relaxed a little bit. "Well I guess that's understandable."
she nodded. Another car length forward. "Well...um..." she tried
too hard to start conversation. "Got a wife, or family or
anything?"

"No family here, I'm a little orphan boy," he laughed and looked

She nodded. "Same...I never knew my family. Grew up house to
house with friends, made my way through school, started working
when I was fourteen to make my money to go to college and here I
am now." Another car length and they'd finally be able to order.
"Life sucks...but I try to make the most of it."

given the space. "I'm glad it's all over though. The constant
fighting and the battles in space... it f*cked us up..."

She looked over at him and gave him a quick study. "I suppose
that's what war does. From your perspective it must have been
pretty severe, because from my end it was only pretty bad." She
frowned, recalling her first attended school dance, what a
disaster.

He looked back at her, nodding in agreement. "It really matters
on where you were. Most civilians didn't realize the gravity of
it, but those who witnessed or participated in the battles are
never the same."
The car in front of them moved forward.
