Jackson gave Haka directions and looked to his sister as she
rested against him. Normally, it would bother him but she looked
so peaceful and Haka didn’t seem to mind. It looked so sweet and
he almost wanted to say something about it, but decided against
it.

Haka pulled up to the house and put the truck in park. "Here we
are."

Jackson nodded. “Thanks Haka.” He told him, opening the door and
attempting to jostle Avery awake. Avery groaned a bit and
nuzzled Haka’s shoulder, grabbing hold of his arm and curling
into him. “Avery, come on, we’re home, we need to get you your
pill.”

Haka carefully pulled his arm out of her hold. "Hey," he said
loudly, but not shouting. "You need to wake up, you're home."

Avery opened her eyes and sat up, looking around. She looked to
Jackson you had his hand outstretched to her and then to her
left where Haka was sitting.
“Sorry...” she mumbled and took Jackson’s hand, getting out of
the truck. As she got down, she turned and smiled to Haka. “I’ll
let you know...” she told him. Jackson put his arm around her
and shut the truck door, thanking Haka as he did so, then turned
to walk Avery up to the house she can get her meds inside.

"You're welcome," Haka said as they got out. He watched them go
to their front door, and once they were safely inside, he drove
off.

Jackson got Avery inside, having to explain the situation to
their mother. She helped Jackson and sighed once Avery was back
in bed. She held out Avery’s pills to her and looked up at
Jackson.
“I’m gonna call a cab to get a ride to the store. I told you she
wasn’t ready yet...” She looked straight at Jackson, who started
to speak.
“Mom, it wasn’t his fault, I tried racing him, and then I was
fooling around at the store.” Avery interrupted, before Jackson
could say a word. He looked at her and slumped his shoulders and
shook her head. Avery shook her head back at him and he rolled
his eyes.

Haka drove back to the grocery store, parking around the back
where a clerk and Asha waited. Together, all three of them
loaded up the bed of the truck with pallets of canned food. Asha
tipped the guy and then got into the truck, buckling as Haka
started to drive. They stopped at the thrift store so she could
buy clothes and then they were off again.
"Asha," Haka said suddenly. He kept his eyes on the road and
hands on the wheel. She lifted her head and looked over. "That
guy, Jackson, it's obvious he likes you."
"Haka," she groaned, rolling her eyes.
"I'm serious!" He said sharply. She sighed.
"He doesn't know me enough to like me," she retorted.
"Well he seems to want to know you," Haka murmured. She gave him
a sidelong look.
"And....?"
"And maybe you should let him get to know you."

Jackson sighed and looked back at Avery as their mother walked
out of the room.
"Haka offered to help fix mom's car." Avery blurted. Jackson
stared at her for a moment and then grinned.
"Now why would he go an' do that?" he asked her, chuckling and
sitting on the edge of her bed. Avery smiled and pulled her
blankets over her lap.
"I don't know. I told him she couldn't afford to pay for the
labor fees and stuff to get it fixed and he offered to look at
it." Her brother smirked and nodded.
"Well that's pretty impressive. So...when are you going to offer
this to mom? You know she won't take charity so well." Avery
paused and looked at him.
"Well...its better to at least try. She hates riding the bus,
and walking even more. Why wouldn't she let him help? It's not
really charity if we still have to pay for the parts." Jackson
nodded, agreeing.
"Maybe you're right. Well good luck anyway." He stood up and
checked the time. "I'm gonna go veg in my room, listen to some
banger music." He chuckled.

*Next Day*
Avery had to be rushed to the E.R. She had continued to keep
failing in finding her breath again. Her brother had heard her
coughing from the other room all night, and when he heard her
C-Pap machine turn on, he waited a little longer.
After an hour of treatment, and still no recovery, he alerted
his mom and had Avery taken to the E.R. for the steroids she
would need to bring down the chronic airway inflammation.
Jackson and their mother went to a small motel across the street
so they could all get their rest.
In the E.R. bed next to Avery's, a guy slightly older than her
was resting on the bed, hooked up to a SAT monitor as well as an
oxygen mask.
