Avery looked at her brother as he walked over and sat down on
the edge of her bed.
"I met a girl at the arcade today." He smiled and folded on leg
up underneath him.
"Oh yeah? Is she cute?" she grinned, and playfully pushed her
brother. Jackson chuckled and nodded.
"Actually, she is. She's from the reservation." He grinned.
Avery stared at him for a moment.
"Will I meet her at the arcade tomorrow?" Jackson shook his head
and sighed.
"Probably not, I got the impression her male companion wasn't
too happy that I was talking to her." Avery frowned.
"Aww, well...I'm sure you'll meet up with her again then."

"Maybe not," Haka said, meeting his grandfather's gaze. "But
unless he proved otherwise, I don't trust him." His grandfather
sighed.
"Anger and hate will not make life easier, only worse. All I can
do is guide you grandson, and hope that you find your path." The
old man spoke quietly. "But for now, we must prepare for the
winter months. Housed need to be repaired, firewood needs
stocked, and food needs to be replenished. There's a hunting
party going out for a week. Go with them, we need all the food
we can."
"Yes grandfather," Haka murmured. The man smiled.
"Let us go enjoy the night."

“Perhaps. Make sure you take your medicine before bed.
And...Gran is supposed to be sending one of her home remedies,
it should be here Monday.” Jackson yawned and stood up. Avery
sighed and shook her head.
“Gran is crazy. I don’t know why she makes that stuff. It never
works.” Avery laughed and stood up. “I’ll watch for it. I need a
drink first and then I’ll take my meds and head to bed.” Jackson
nodded left her room.
“Well Goodnight Ave.”

Haka climbed out of his grandfather's truck and walked around to
the bed, yanking tarps off. Inside were three deer, and the
other trucks pulling up also contained game. As the hunting
party started to unload, the women came out with carts, ready to
skin the dead animals and prepare the meat for storage.
"Welcome back grandson," Mantotohpa greeted him as he walked
over. "I see the hunt went well." Haka looked at him as he
loaded the last deer into a cart.
"It did. We got seven deer and three elk," he replied. "It
should be enough to last for a fee months, before the next hunt.
That will be smaller game, but we can take more without damaging
the population." His grandfather nodded.
"Very good. I sent Asha out to buy some more canned goods with
the money we made selling dream catchers. You should go help
her." Mantotohpa turned around and headed back to the lodge.
Haka nodded and quickly sprayed down the bed with water and
bleach before driving into town.
Asha was walking down the aisle of cans, writing down UPCs for
various soups and vegetables to help last them through the
winter.

Jackson and Avery were both walking through the parking lot to
the supermarket.
“You doing okay, Ave?” he asked, looking down at his twin. She
seemed a little winded but she looked up and smiled.
“Yeah, I’m alright. Just need to sit down once we get up there.”
She took in a deep breath, and palmed her inhaler in her pocket.
Jackson nodded and put his arm around his sister’s shoulder.

Haka pulled up in the truck, parking close to the back. As he
got out, he noticed the guy from the arcade, arms around what
was obviously his sister. Instead of saying anything, Haka went
straight inside to find his cousin.
"Asha?" He called out as he rounded a corner. She looked up and
moved hair out of her eyes.
"Hey, how did the hunt go?" She asked as he walked up.
"We have enough for now. Another party will have to go out in a
few months though," he replied.

Avery started speed walking for the door so she could get there
sooner, and sat down on the bench just outside the door. She
took a deep breath and pulled her inhaler from her pocket and
took a huff off of it. Jackson watched her, worried for his
twin. When she finally caught her breath, she shoved her inhaler
back in her pocket and smiled as she stood up.
“I’m good now. Let’s go.”
“Alright.” Jackson led her through the door, once they were
inside, Avery grabbed a cart and used it to help her move around
more easily. “Let’s start with some meat, Mom wanted us to get a
roast and some hamburger.”

Asha looked at her list. "I've pretty much got everything we
needed. Just need to go to the thrift store for more clothes and
blankets."
"Not the fabric store?" He rose a brow as they started walking.
"We don't have enough for it," Asha replied.

Avery placed the last of the meat in their cart and started to
head back up the aisle.
“What else do we need?” She asked, looking to Jackson for the
list their mom had made them.
“Um, creamed corn and green beans, beef stock and some milk.” He
read the list after unfolding it from his pocket and looked for
the aisle. “Canned foods is where we need to go.” He told her.
She nodded and started pushing the cart in that direction.

Haka sighed heavily. "I see," he muttered, raking a hand through
his bangs. He rolled ideas around in his head. "How many pallets
are we getting this time?"
"Six of each," she responded. "That's everything we've made this
year, minus the $200 for clothing."
