"Yes, sir," Kael responded, thanking him again before saluting
him and leaving. He was still in somewhat of a shock, him as
Lieutentant! He allowed himself a little bit of a smirk as he
headed for the elevators once more. He'd put this up and then go
get some food. Now he was hungry. He stepped into the pod and
leaned back as it took him back to the living quarters.
L'aira was completely lost in thought, trying hard not to focus
on the day of her break-up or the day she had nearly lost her
life.

Garrison stood over his desk and then looked around his office
quarters. He took a deep breath and let out a heavy sigh. He
left the room and started walking, going no where in particular.
After some time, he came to a door, and waited for it to open.
It's low hiss sounded as the panels slid open and he stepped
inside, stopping. "L'aira..." he spoke, his voice cracking as
though he choked on the words. "I uh...sorry. I'll let you
alone..." He started to turn back to the door to leave. His face
contorting with a sort of uncomfortable pain.
Stef finally closed her eyes and started to fall asleep. Her
vision turning pure red as she dozed off. She could see her home
planet all of it's thriving inhabitants. Even though her home
planet was but a memory to her, being a young Xefer when it was
destroyed, she still remembered it just like it was yesterday. A
century had already come and gone since then, and yet, the
thoughts, and reminders...the nightmares still haunted her.

L'aira was startled out of her thoughts by Garrison's voice, and
she almost cringed at the heartbroken tone. She gripped her
prayer beads tightly and shook her head as she stood up. "You
don't have to leave," she said quietly. "The observation deck is
public space... you have every right to be here, just as I do."

He stopped and stared at the doorway. He took a deep breath and
then turned back to her. "Why is this so awkward? Haven't we
talked this out? Haven't we made peace with this?" He thought
back to the day their lives would be torn in two. The planet
they had been assigned a mission to was under great stress.
They were on a rescue mission that was also an artifact recovery
mission. In the last moments, having recovered the artifacts,
and nearly having gotten their rescue back to the shuttle, there
was a great trembling that caused them to lose their foothold.
The ground started to give way beneath their feet and in a quick
decision, Garrison pushed his crew forward. As he did this, a
chasm was created that divided him from his crew. L'aira had
stopped and panicked, trying to figure out how to get him to the
shuttle before the whole planet imploded on itself. When
Garrison figured out what she was doing, he became angry. He
knew this would be his end, and but it was the sacrifices of the
job. He was their captain, and it was his job to keep them safe,
and get them back from every mission, regardless of the
repercussions. This time it meant, getting them to the shuttle
even if he had to be left behind to die. He yelled at her to get
on the shuttle and leave him. They argued about it over the
chasm, as it fell apart further and further. Finally, the crew
pulled her on the shuttle and took off to the ship.
After sometime though, the shuttle had turned back and when the
door opened, they were yanking him inside only moments before
the entire area crumbled away into a fiery pit. Once they were
back to the ship, L'aira followed him all over the place,
crying, screaming, and shouting that he was being stupid out
there. She told him she knew they could save him, she said she
knew she couldn't live with herself if he died back there. He
stopped her and argued that it was his duty as the captain of
this ship to do what he did. He reminded her that they all could
have died, and then he wouldn't be able to rest in death
peacefully had she gone down with him. He told her that if her
feelings were going to get in the way of doing the job they were
assigned, then he was going to have to remove her from the team.
And he did. And that was the end of what they had.
He stood before her and ran his hands over his face. They had
several conversations after that, apologizing for many things,
mostly the yelling, the arguing, and then his decision to remove
her from the team. But after the Council determined she was a
risk, things had become more strained. He still wasn't sure why.
He thought he was doing the right thing.

"I thought we had," L'aira replied weakly, thumbing her beads.
She ran her free hand through her hair and sighed deeply.
"I'm sorry," she mumbled. "I know this is my fault. I just..."
Her voice trailed off. She didn't want to confess she still
loved him and that it caused her pain being so close to him, yet
being unable to be with him. Taking a deep breath, she
straightened and squared her shoulders. "I know what's expected
of me and I am trying to abide by the rules."

Garrison sighed and shook his head. "This isn't just your fault.
I let what we had get in the way when missions were critical.
And I shouldn't have done that. I should know better, as the
Captain of this vessel, I should know when to keep personal
ideals separate from business affairs." He ran his hand over his
hair and stepped forward towards her. He figured he also had a
problem with attachments toward her. All the times she expressed
how she felt towards him and his Captain rank always backed out.
He felt love for her, but never told her so. He sometimes
wondered if that was part of their falling apart.

She felt him move closer and she looked up at him. "I.. I wish I
had acted differently, Garrison," she confessed. She looked
tired, but not just physically, also mentally so. She did her
best to busy herself, and it usually resulted in her collapsing
from exhaustion. Jaarl always scolded her for it, but also
allowed her to rest while he ran the infirmary for her.

He turned and looked at the door, then back at her. He took a
deep breath and punched the locking mech on the door. There was
a soft beep that sounded as he then started moving towards her.
Gently, he reached out his hand, his finger leading the way and
catching one of hers in his. "L'aira..." he whispered. "I don't
wish you to be any different than you already are."

Her breath caught in her throat as his hand found hers, and she
shut her eyes tightly to fight back the tears beginning to
swell. "If I hadn't overreacted," she whispered, hand squeezing
his tightly, "if I had just kept my composure... we wouldn't be
in this situation..."

He shook his head. "L'aira, stop. I won't stand here and let you
beat yourself up over this. There's no way to know that this
wouldn't have happened either way. And maybe it could be worse.
If that mission hadn't ended up the way it did, I wouldn't have
had a good cause to present to the Council to keep you on this
vessel. They would have transferred you to a sister ship. I am
honestly glad that, no matter how we are now, that I was able to
keep you aboard my ship. I couldn't imagine having it any other
way."
