Ami had her arms crossed tightly against her body, eyes red and
watery. She walked with Heero in silence until they came to her
tiny apartment and went inside.

When they were inside, Heero closed the door tightly and locked
every lock she had available. He turned his back to the door and
looked at her. "Ami...please understand...I am a war pilot. I do
not fear having a child because I do not wish to have one, I
fear having a child because I do not wish for a child to be as I
was, without a parent in their life and left to make their own
way on their own. My reaction in the cafe was of shock and self
loathing, not of dislike or disapproval." He pushed off the door
and went straight for her, putting his hands on her jaw line
along her neck. "I don't want you, to be left alone with a
child, while I'm stuck at war with no way of being able to
protect you." His gaze went between her eyes back and forth.
"I...I love you Ami..." he choked and then cleared his throat.

She looked into his eyes and swallowed, tears starting to
trickle down her cheeks. "H-heero..." she whimpered, starting to
lean into him.

He swiped his thumbs over her cheeks and wiped the tears away.
"Ami...I'm not going to lie, I'm nowhere near ready for
parenthood, but it was my cross to bear when I didn't take care
in having these relations with you. So I'm not going to just
back down. I'll do whatever I need to do. Whatever you want me
to do...." he stared at her for a bit before pressing his lips
gently to hers. "What...do you want me to do?"

"Stay with me," she begged softly, closing her eyes as his lips
left hers. Her arms came around him tightly and she clung to
him. "Please."

He sighed and held her tightly to him. "I can't stay right
now...it's too dangerous. I could already be putting you both at
danger just by being here. I have to go finish what I was
assigned to do. Once it's over, then you'll be safe and I'll
request non-deployment status. Dr. J will understand....sort
of."

She shook her head and toyed with his hair lightly. "No.. don't
be," she murmured, starting to relax.

to get back to base." He leaned and kissed her softly.
