Leeville Fly Fishing Weekend - June 22-24, 2018
By: Catchcoma Date: May 20, 2018, 4:07 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
It began over two decades ago as a combined surf fishing trip
weekend with members of the Red Stick Fly Fishers and Acadiana
Fly Rodders. It evolved to join members of clubs from across
Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as a few members from clubs
elsewhere. The Grand Isle Fly Fishing Weekend brought fly
anglers together for a great weekend of saltwater fly fishing
and comradery. It culminated with the Saturday evening fish and
shrimp fry, with freshly-caught fish filets supplied by
participants.
Last year, the event was cancelled due to a scheduling snafu.
That resulted in RSFF discussing the future of the event and
other options. At a club meeting this Spring, Saltwater Chairman
Randy Leonpacher discussed the concerns and issues with
continuing the event at Grand Isle, and proposed a move to
Leeville. The club voted nearly unanimously in favor of the
change.
So the Grand Isle Fly Fishing Weekend is now the "Leeville Fly
Fishing Weekend" set for June 22-24, 2018. Headquarters and
activities will be at Boudreaux's Waterfront Motel in Leeville.
As in the past, participants are free to stay whereever they
like. UNLIKE the past, everyone is responsible for making their
own reservations. Once again, the event will culminate with the
Saturday evening fry to take place at Boudreauxs, with the fish
being contributions of freshly-caught cleaned fish filets from
participants.
Good fishing for reds, drum, and sheepshead can be found all
along the Highway 1 corridor from Galliano to Grand Isle. The
better speckled trout fishing will be around Golden Meadow,
Leeville, and Grand Isle. For those who would miss surf fishing,
that option is still available. For those who want to night
fish, there is now a lighted pier at the nearby Leeville Public
Launch.
There is still some discussion about whether or not there will
be a shrimp boil on Friday night. If not, there are several
restaurant options in the Golden Meadow and Leeville area.
In order to insure enough food - including shrimp, salad, drinks
and dessert - Randy is asking that those coming give him a
headcount. Please send an email to Randy Leonpacher at
rmleonpacr(at)bellsouth(dot)net.
