Surf Fishing - Fly Line & Rod Questions
       By: Sean-NOLA Date: February 11, 2018, 11:15 pm

It's been a few years since I've been surf fishing in Grand
Isle. In the past, I would fish mostly clousers with a floating
line, and had a moderate amount of success.
Although we're a few months from surf fishing primetime, I
wanted to ask the surf fishing gurus if it be more beneficial to
fish an intermediate or sink tip line, as opposed to a floating
       line?
Also, is there a distinct advantage of using a longer flyrod
       (10ft. vs 9ft.)?

Sean, sorry for the belated response.
During the early years that the Red Stick club hosted their
Grand Isle Weekend, there were a few participants who always did
better in the surf than others, and the one thing they had in
common was the use of either intermediate or sink tip fly lines.
Dan Weber was one. He would cast out a Clouser Minnow, let it
sink down, then start stripping. His claim was that the fly
sunk deeper and faster, and when stripped, the lline was not
subject to wave action like a floating line was, and continued
to remain deeper below the surface. Personally, I always use an
intermediate line when surf fishing - except when fishing
       poppers.
As for 10-foot rods... I built one specifically for surf
fishing. A single-handed model. The advantage of a long rod is
distance and clearance off the water. Accuracy is not a
requirement unless the fish are busting bait or shrimp in a
specific spot. I know a few folks who use double-handed rods in
the surf - specifically switch rods - for those reasons. I've
not tried a 2H rod in the surf, but I imagine it would be no
more difficult to use than when deep wading a big river.

Thanks for the reply, Catch! I plan on trying more surf fishing
than I have the last few years. Fingers crossed. I have a
sink-tip 7wt . line, and will probably be getting some
intermediate line soon for my other line wts. I was asking
about rod length because I have an opportunity to pick up a 10'
8wt., and was wondering if it would be worth-while to make the
       purchase.

Sean, did you ever get that 10' rod and if so , how do you like
       it ?
