The Sheepy

Hey Catch, you missed an upcoming tournament on the homepage of
this site. "The Sheepy" is a fly only tournament targeting
sheepshead taking place on February 24 and 25 out of Hopedale
Marina. This will be the 5th or 6th year (I think) that the
tournament has been held. The details are just getting ironed
out. Follow @thesheepy on instagram for up to date info or just
ask me and I can tell you what I know.
Buy in is $300 per two man boat for the two day tournament.
Team with the most sheepshead wins, with tie breaker going to
the largest sheepshead.
Payout: 1st place 60%, 2nd 25%, 3rd 15%
Prizes for: Smallest redfish, biggest sheepshead, and redfish
with the most spots
Catch, I think a lot of these fly tournaments are not pure
competition in nature like most conventional tackle ones. It
seems that most fly tournaments focus on ecosystem/species
awareness, fundraising for a cause, and/or camaraderie and
meeting up with others with similar interests.

Thanks for the update. I was aware of it last year but hadn't
heard anything this year until now. Will add to the calendar.
I agree about the nature of fly tournaments. In most ways, they
mirror the kayak tournaments - low entry fee, low payouts, often
for charity, often awards for "random" catch (leopard red,
tagged bass, etc), door prizes, lots of comradery, etc. When
we first started with Paddlepalooza, my thought was that this
would lead to the same problems I saw in my bass tournament
days. Much to my surprise, it was the complete opposite. The
very few incidents of cheating nationwide (3 I know of,
including 1 in Bayou Coast) have all involved someone who had a
monetary benefit to the sport. I guess as long as there's money
involved, there will be some asshole who'll damage the integrity
of contests. But fortunately, most puddlers and fly anglers are
really in it for the fun.

I absolutely agree Catch. When it's all about the money, some
**** will find a way to cheat out of greediness. When the focus
is on other aspects, the cheating mentality isn't present
anymore.

That is correct. For Saturday, the boats can launch wherever to
avoid the gear anglers.
