Time At The Vice...
By: Dschouest Date: December 27, 2017, 8:09 pm

Well, between duck hunting, and working on my bastard of a boat,
I have found some time to sit at the vice with some beautiful
music (the band Agalloch mostly) to see what kind of creatures
my mind could conjure up.... With much of my life the last five
months having been a giant mess of emotions, and myself finally
finding help in both God and a doctor who gave me a second
chance mentally, I have been wanting to stock my flies up, ready
my boat, and prepare for the next chapter of my fly fishing
life.
As always with these weird things I make, I welcome constructive
criticism and comments.

First up is a crab I worked on a month or so ago. Instead of
using marabou for a tail as I had many times previous, this time
I used gold braid to make a large bump to separate two clumps of
craft fur into claws of a sort. I am also working more on
shaping the EP Fiber (or Congo Hair) fibers into a smaller
crabby shape. I want to start tying this fly in smaller sizes (4
to 6 once my hooks come in) for sheepies and puppy drum.

Up next is a variant on a bonefish fly I had seen on the web I
believe. Or maybe it just came from a long night of wondering
"What looks fishy enough to put on a hook?" I like the flash on
top of the craft fur wing: it gives it the impression of a
charlie, but the legs allover make it buggy: I got a feeling
that it will move water well and stimulate the lateral line like
I want.

Lastly is a sandflea pattern I found in a book at my local
library, Saltwater Flies of the Southeast & Gulf Coasts. I found
a fly or two in there from our own Catch Cormier! But, I am
loving how simple this pattern is, and I like how even on a size
2, it looks small. Im hoping Mr. Sheepsie likes it next time I
get to throw a fly in front of one.

Nice looking flies, Dustin.
Really love that last batch of sand fleas. I pulled out my copy
of Saltwater Flies of the Gulf Coast and couldn't find it. Do
you remember what page it was on? I agree... that's a fly that
has Goat potential written all over it!

Thanks Catch!
I remember it being toward the later half of the book. I can't
recall directly. I like to go to the library on my off days to
see what books on fly fishing they have and read. I think I have
a picture of it.
It won't let me post the pic, but I believe it was in the last
third of the book. Said it was a sand flea pattern for specks
and drum I believe. But it just looks like great sheepie candy
