       Full moon blues

Jim Smolenski, Bill Morrison, and myself - members of the
Kisatchie Fly Fishers - met up at 4am Saturday morning. Plan was
to take our kayaks down to Freds Lounge marsh on the east side
of Calcasieu. Just before we departed for the 2-hour drive, Jim
looks up at the big full moon to the west and asks, "Wonder how
that full moon will affect the fishing?". Normally this time of
year it isn't a big factor, but this hasn't been a normal year.
The drive took a bit longer than expected. The Intracoastal
bridge on Grand Lake Road is out, so we had to make a loop.
When we arrived, conditions couldn't have been better. Nice and
sunny, mild, no wind, good tide movement.
Despite those conditions, it was one of the toughest days I've
had in many years! The speckled trout bite that was so good a
couple weeks ago was almost non-existent. We quickly abandoned
that and went after redfish. Good thing, because with the low
water, the sightcasting for reds was outstanding! Notice I said
"sightcasting was outstanding". Collectively, we spotted and
cast to 45 reds. We had a total of 6 reds hooked, only 2
landed. I ended with a 26" and Jim with a 25". Bill also
       landed a nice flounder.
It must've been some sort of record for the number of refusals.
We were standup fishing in our yaks and got to witness as fish
after fish would either follow then refuse, or completely ignore
our flies. We offered them poppers, spoon flies, crab flies,
clousers, sliders, charlies and seaducers. My Coma Spoon is
normally like bacon to a dog, but I had more hits from
       sheepshead than I did redfish!
I'll probably make another trip before Christmas. But I'll wait
until sometime around the new moon.

Catch I think the full moon affected the specks everywhere. Just
talked to some friends that went to Lake Decade this weekend.
The specks were few and far between but they loaded up on bass
in the dead end canals. Afternoon bite was much better than
       morning.
