       Welcome to the new forum
By: Catchcoma Date: August 20, 2017, 6:03 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
The new Louisiana Fly Fishing website is up. There's good news
       and bad.
First, the bad. All those great posts in our old forum - and the
older forum - and the really old forum - are all gone. Well,
not entirely. But to reconstruct them into a new forum would
have been a monumental task. When I say well into the five
       figures, I'm not joking!!
A lot of geeks knock hosted forums such as the one you're on
now. But the truth is that it takes a lot of time and effort to
maintain an installed forum on a website. And there's no
guarantee the updates will work with the server it's on. That's
the beauty of hosted forums - someone else does the updates and
testing and insures that the forums work.
The other bad is that "there's no such thing as free". You'll
see ads on this forum. I'm okay with that for now. If it gets
bad, we'll pay for the ad-free option.
Now the good. This forum is Tapatalk compatible. "Hooray!"
says your mobile devices. Also there's a lot more options for
text formatting. There are also options for integrating with
       Facebook and Twitter.
Best of all... you can upload photos into your posts! 8) Or
other documents. But check out the restrictions! I've created
another post with photo guidelines just to clarify.
Over the next few weeks, our Associate Editor will be testing
       out some of the options.
When rebuilding a new laflyfish.com, my first thought was "Do I
even include a forum?". After all, Facebook and other social
media have pretty much obsoleted most forums. I was not
surprised to learn that only a small fraction of forums that
existed five years ago are still alive today. Facebook has
       amazing capabilities.
But it also has a few major flaws - at least when it comes to
discussion threads. First, the archival system is lousy. If
you're looking for a discussion on 8-weight rods, you pretty
much have to start a new one. I've noticed that after awhile,
many experts just choose to sit a discussion out because they've
participated in that topic so many times. Second, if you have
an event or activity, you're pretty much limited to "liked"
audience. Unless you're willing to pay Facebook to broadcast
your event - and that can get costly. Even then, FB only
reaches a limited audience. Which brings to the 3rd reason for
having a forum - almost a third of all folks aren't on Facebook.
Some of them may have an FB page, but they never use it. They
tried it, didn't like it and won't return.
So we have a forum. I hope LFF readers will continue to use it.
       Even if sparingly.
       Thanks! The Management

So no archive of the old forums? Man that's a loss, there was
so much good info in there. Maybe you should print up all the
old forum post as a book, it would be encyclopedic.

Actually there are quite a number of "like" buttons on the
bottom right of each post. Looking them over, some seem a bit
       gay.

To be honest, I've not tried it out yet. If it's not working,
I'll have my associate editor look into it. He speaks Tapatalk.
Ron, what I think most folks will miss is all your great fishing
reports, since you don't do much of that any more, lol. Also,
       Pete's pearls of wisdom.

I prefer to call them "Rub it in " reports.... I would get some
material for one this weekend if that damn Harvey wasn't about
to dump a ton of rain on us. Hopefully Labor Day weekend..... I
know where some fish are right now.
