The Student Manual

Welcome to Kotiah-Yovanovitch International School, called
Kotiah-Yovanovitch for short, home of the Dazzling Dodos. The
school colors are azure and yellow.
Kotiah-Yovanovitch is a residential, grade 5-12, school that
runs on the New York State schedule, from Labor Day to the third
week of June. High School and some eighth grade students will
take New York State Regents examinations. Eleventh and twelfth
graders may take advanced placement courses or earn credit
through dual enrollment at Westchester Community College.
Kotiah-Yovanovitch wants you to grow academically, socially, and
as a whole person. That means you need to stay safe. Therefore,
we have the following rules:
SAFETY
When you arrive at school, you will receive your
photo-identification rfid card or credential, called a D-card,
as in Dazzling Dodo. The card has a hole in it. That is so you
can put it on a string and wear it around your neck. Please wear
this card at all times when you are on campus and at school
functions. Your D-Card acts as your library card, and also as a
key to unlock the Ridge Road gate, your Residence House door,
your suite door, and your bedroom door.
Please keep doors locked at all time. DO NOT CHOCK OR PROP THEM
OPEN. Do not allow students you do not know or whom you haven't
invited to "tail gate" into buildings behind you.
You must install the Kotiah-Yovanovitch app on your cell phone.
It is available in the both the I-store and Play Store. It is a
fast way to keep up on all the latest events on campus and also
to make rapid contact with school security or your Suite
Advisor.
All middle school students need a Campus Pass when going out of
their Residence House without adult supervision. Ask your Suite
Advisor for a pass. Tell her where you are going. Staff can ask
any student on campus for their credential and any middle school
student for their campus pass. Please put the pass around your
neck along with your credential and display it prominently.
High school students do not need a pass to travel around campus,
but when they leave the suite, they should tell their Suite
Advisor where they are going and what they plan to do. They
should also sign out on their suite's in and out board.
Middle school students may not leave campus without a Suite
Advisor, Recreation Staff, or teacher supervising them. At the
adult's discretion, they may be given independent time at a
destination, but they are expected to return to the group at a
designated rendez vous point at a designated time. The adult
may suggest setting an alarm on their phones to let them know
when they should head back.
High school students may obtain a pass to leave campus from
their Suite Advisors if they are not going with a supervised
group. To obtain a pass, the student needs to tell their Suite
Advisor where they are going, what they plan to do, and when
they plan to return. If they are going to miss curfew, they need
to ask permission to do so. If their plans change, they are
responsible for contacting their Suite Advisor via their phone
or app.
No student may bring the following items to campus:
- Pets
- Motorized vehicles including, motorcycles, automobiles, motor
scooters. Electrified bicycles may be an exception.
- Firearms
- Hunting Knives
- Nunchaku or shuriken
- Fireworks including sparklers
- Credit cards -- Debit cards are OK
The school is smoke-free, vape-free, alcohol-free, and
controlled substance free. If you need prescription medication,
you must report to the infirmary to receive each dose. Suite
Advisors may dispense nonprescription medications.
Suite Advisors each set curfew and lights out or quiet hours for
their suite (middle school), or pair of suites (high school).
Curfew means that you need to be inside either your Residence
House or suite. Your Suite Advisor will choose the type of
curfew for your suite and its schedule.
Lights out means what it sounds like.
Quiet hours mean that students are in their bedrooms and not
making a lot of noise.
Failure to be in by curfew will show up on your app when you tap
your D-Card to enter your Residence House or suite. Failure to
return to campus as scheduled will cause the Ridge Road Gate or
your building door to give a DENIED signal when you try to open
them. You will need to either phone your Suite Advisor or
contact her via the Kotiah-Yovanovitch app.
Suite Advisors handle all curfew, travel, lights out, and quite
hour violations on a case by case basis.
If you think you may miss curfew or rendez vous for any reason,
please phone or contact (via the app) your Suite Advisor or the
adult in charge of the activity to let her know ahead of time.
One of the good things about placing discipline in the hands of
a Suite Advisor is she knows you and can forgive such issues as
a broken down bus, a long line, acts of God etc... If you would
like to stay out past curfew, and have a good reason, you can
ask your Suite Advisor for an exception.
ELECTRONICS
Kotiah-Yovanovitch International School is a 21st Century
institution. That said, we have rules for keeping electronics
safe, and keeping you in control.
Do not vandalize the school's computer system.
Do not use the school's computer system to vandalize other
computer systems or harass others.
Some classes require you to download a variety of polling
applications or other academic software for your smartphone.
This is mandatory.
Other teachers ask you to surrender your cell phone at the start
of each class. These teachers usually provide magnet-locked
packs into which you can slip your phone during class.
A few teachers have a no-technology policy.
Please obey all your teachers with regards to your cell phone.
DRESS CODE
On weekdays during class time and at school sponsored
activities, with the exception of athletics, dance, drama club,
cheer leading, or modeling for art, all students, faculty, and
staff must wear clothing that covers their shoulders, bellies,
and thighs.
Close toed shoes are recommended for chemistry lab and some shop
and home economics classes. Students will need to tuck in head
scarves and tie back hair in shops and laboratories. Hair nets
will be provided for those in culinary arts.
The fashion accessory all students must wear around their necks
is the credential, their D-Card.
WHAT TO BRING
Summer and winter clothing. Remember you have one five drawer
dresser and a smallish closet, so bring what you need, but not
too much. Don't forget a winter coat, hat, gloves/mittens, and
boots. Long underwear is also a good idea.
One or two sets of extra long twin sheets and several towels.
Two blankets or quilts
A pillow and bedspread
Cell Phone, speaker, ear buds/ear phones, chargers with spare
cables.
Lap top with charger.
USB drives
Other school supplies (notebooks, paper, binder, pens, pencils
etc...)
ice skates, roller blades, bicycle, skis (cross country or
downhill)
toiletries and a plastic pail into which to put them for easy
transport to the communal bathroom.
At least one cleaned out soda bottle with tight fitting screw
top.
60 or 100 watt light bulbs or LED equivalent.
Screw driver.
Musical instrument.
