This is another post for those who have never tasted of
dormitory life in a paternalistic institution.
Again, early 1980's Cornell Dining is very much the model, but
Cornell has very good food, and so too does Kotiah-Yovanovitch.
In some ways, Kotiah-Yovanovitch food is better(Yo'll see why
below). Because there are only about 5,500 mouths to feed each
weekday and a bit fewer on the weekend, Kotiah-Yovanovitch has a
single dining hall located in Landon- Burchard-Durren Union.
It has a (double) main line or hot bar, a cold bar where no line
forms, a salad bar, a cereal and energy bar bar (aka the Bar
Bar), and a junk food and bread box/bar, as well as one to two
specialty stations. There is always peanut butter (several
varieties), jelly (preserves or jellies), butter, bread, other
bread spreads, cold cereal, junk food, bread, fresh fruit, and
either yogurt or cottage cheese at all meals. There is also a
full beverage bar at all meals.
Students enter and if there is a line at the hot line or
specialty stations, line up for food at either the hot line or
specialty station of their choice. They can also take food from
the cold bar, salad bar, Bar Bar, or bread box. When it's their
turn to be served at the line, the server asks them what they
would like out of what is available that day and gives it to
them. This way students are never served anything they detest.
If liver is one of the entrees, you can ask for one of the other
three choices or go to a specialty station or fix yourself a
peanut butter sandwich. Similarly if you detest coleslaw and
there is a big bowl of it on the cold bar, make a tossed salad
at the salad bar, or have the pickled beets, or no salad at all.
And yes, it's all you can eat.
Breakfast consists of eggs, some sort of meat, pancakes/french
toast/waffles, hard boiled eggs, and hot cereal in the hot line.
There is cut up, dried, or fresh fruit in a big bowl on the cold
bar, assorted breads and pastries, an impressive cold cereal and
energy bar bar (Yes, the world famous Bar Bar), unlimited fruit
juice, milk, soda, coffee, tea, and a latte machine. In
addition there is a short order station that makes omelettes to
       order or fried eggs.
Lunch and dinner feature four entrees, one of them meatless and
two hot side dishes on the hot line, two specialty stations
that change whenever the dining hall staff gets bored, a cold
bar with a variety of cold salads/fruits/desserts, a salad bar,
and the usual beverages, breads, junk foods etc... as well as a
       freezer of ice cream novelties.
This is not the USDA school lunch program. There is soda, tea,
coffee, and yes a latte machine, fruit punch, and of course
juices, water, and milk available. There is junk food in the
       bread box too.
One feature of Kotiah-Yovanovitch food service is Suite
pantries. If you are in middle school your Suite Advisor brings
the pantry box to dinner, and then students fill it with junk
food, fruit, and other snack-worthy items. Students should also
arrive on campus with a clean soda bottle. They can fill this
bottle with soft drinks to take back to the suite pantry as
well. If you are in high school, you have to fetch the Pantry
Box yourself and make a pantry run.
The Story God promises to post sample menus.
The downside to all this is that if you are a student you eat
95% of your meals in the dining hall, and if you are in middle
school, your suite often eats together.
