Short and Shorter Straws

"I got a 3:15pm schedule time," sighed Marion as she set down
her tray with its bowl of peach yogurt and two slices of whole
wheat bread and hibiscus tea. She and her roommate, Zia, sat by
one of the big bay windows watching students cross the quad. It
was the Tuesday after Labor Day, the first day of September, and
the day to register for electives.
Zia toyed with her D-Card and stirred her Cream of Wheat. She
had real black tea and an orange that she scored and peeled. "I
got 11:45 this morning. It means no lunch line...not that I
care."
"It means we end up in health."
"We have to take health anyway."
"What do you feel like doing?"
"We can track down Miella and go to Central Avenue or we can
stay on campus and swim."
"There's open art and craft studios."
"How many places are left?
"Six."
"I'd rather be outside."
"Fine, let me beg Miella to let us off campus. " In four short
days, Marion had learned a whole new system. Malta was morphing
into a bad dream. Her parents would chafe at the way she lived,
but Marion was not her parents. Besides, the system seemed fair
enough. Both Marion and Zia's schedule slots were the luck of
the draw. Miella trusted them enough to give them two hours off
campus, and after three days if being supervised, tested,
credentialed and what have you, both of them could use a break,
even if they did not plan anything grand.
"Just don't let my parents get in trouble at the Sober Home. Mom
gets bored easily. Dad, is more practical. It will be Mom that
gets in trouble...."
"I got Miella in live chat," Zia broke Marion's revery.
"What does she say."
"Set an alarm. I have to turn back to campus at 10:45 or 11am,
depending how far I get."
A few seconds later, Miella popped up in live chat on the
Kotiah-Yovanovitch app. "Can I have a pass to go to Central
Avenue?"
"Sure.... but you have to make sure Zia is back."
"Understood."
"What are you doing this afternoon?"
"Either swimming or art. It may be the only art I get."
"Maybe there will still be a place open."
Marion did not believe it. She knew no way out of her bad piece
of luck. Every other day until January, the health teach would
preach at her. Health was the new religion. Health was moral
education. She was going to be stuck taking health.
