The Joke is on You

Albina had nearly fallen asleep with the light on when her phone
rung. She did not recognize the number, but answered anyway.
"Hello this is Kadie" said a voice on the other end. It was
close to midnight. The girls were settled down. Albina blinked.
"This had to be an emergency," she thought.
"What can I do for you?" she was surprised at how professional
she could make herself sound. She reached for her D-Card on its
bead cord covered with pale pink and blue flower beads like a
Hawaiian lei.
"That was an ephing dirty joke you played on me at lunch. You
owe me one."
"I what?"
"With that little girl...what was her name."
"Yours or mine."
"The one in tights in the heat of summer."
"Tikvah. She's an expert at dealing with the dining hall."
"Some expert. Did you see what was on Shayla's tray?"
"It could have been worse."
"Cereal is krraapp!"
"Cereal is fortified and eaten with milk, plus Shayla had energy
bars and Tikvah had grapefruit juice. They said when we were in
training to only intervene if a child was not taking a meal and
eating most of it. If they serve cereal, it's one of the choices
and..."
"You don't care about keeping fit do you?"
"Not really."
"It shows."
"What's that supposed to mean."
"What you think it means. I want my girls to stay fit. It's part
of lifelong learning."
"I think there are more important issues."
"Like what? You owe me an apology."
"I did nothing wrong."
"We need to work together."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means what you think it means. You owe me one."
"Kadie, kids are free to eat cereal three times a day. Get over
it."
"We're free to guide and discipline our kids."
"Yes, but we have different ideas of discipline. I think we're
going to have to agree to disagree."
"You are an arrogant one."
"I'm going to stand my ground."
"Over ephing cereal?"
"As good a place as any."
Kadie hung up. Albina wondered how she would sleep. Tomorrow
would be a rough day. Her suite had already drawn the 4:45pm
time for elective registration. That was going to make improv
activities look like a walk in the park.
