Welcome to Westchester

When you think of Westchester County, you probably think of
wealthy people and a kind of Beverly Hills on the East Coast.
There are wealthy sections, but for those who actually live
there (and the StoryGod grew up less than three miles from 418
Ridge Rd, and there really is a convent at that address) this is
not the whole or even the correct story.
Westchester is built up and urban. Less than two miles (perhaps
less than one) from campus is Central Avenue, a street that runs
from White Plains to the Bronx (a borough in New York City. From
the hills on a clear night you can see the Empire State
building). Westchester contains the third and fourth most
populous cities in New York, Mount Vernon and Yonkers
respectively. White Plains, the county seat ranks sixth. There
is great shopping in White Plains, and the main drag is known as
Mamaroneck Avenue. It's fun to window shop even if you are broke
and the Westchester is a typical, upscale Simon mall. There is
another mall growing up behind it. The StoryGod wonders who buys
this stuff.
Buses in Westchester are called the Bee Line. There is commuter
rail to New York City. Unlike in real life your Mega-Metro card
recharges itself, and you can get all the way from the tip of
Long Island (Which is on the other side of New York City) to
southern Connecticut to Putnam and Rockland counties. Of course
you are stuck for time aren't you..... Too bad you have to go to
school, participate in extracurriculars, and there's only
twenty-four hours in the day.
Westchester is among the oldest settled areas in the United
States. Some time ago, White Plains celebrated its
tricentennial. There are historic sites from the 17th Century
and Colonial Era that you can tour. There are two SUNY colleges.
There is a museum in Yonkers on the Hudson River. Westchester is
also an immigrant destination.
The climate in Westchester is modified continental. The area
gets both western and coastal snow storms in the winter. It is
not really cold enough for the snow to stick. Also snow days
seldom happen because the county knows how to clear the roads.
Because it is northwest of New York City, and not on Long
Island, the nearest beach with waves is a hundred miles away and
requires two trains and a bus to reach. If you want to swim in
Long Island Sound, you can take two buses (change at White
Plains) to Rye Playland. Of course most of the school year is
too cold for outdoor swimming. And yes, there is an on campus
skating rink and may be other rinks. Skiing is mainly upstate
and in New Jersey.
And please don't walk down Central Avenue in a bikini.
