All the Saints are Dead

"Corianne, can I ask you a really personal question?" Tikvah
inquired. Corianne lay on her bed in shortie bottoms and a red
sleep shirt. She did not look Jewish, but she was. That made all
the difference.
"Yeah...OK."
"Why did you eat pork tonight?"
"Because it tastes good with cabbage in Chinese food."
"You know you can get closer to God if you don't eat pork."
"You're kidding."
"I'm not...."
"You think God cares about what you put in your stomach? I
realize you do but..."
"What do you think you have to do to get close to God?"
Corianne blinked. "Be a holy person like a saint," she answered.
"And how do yo do that?"
"Well, real Saints have to be dead, but you have to pray a lot
and go out in the desert, and then maybe God talks to you. The
rest of us can pray but God mostly leaves us alone."
"What if I told you there are six hundred and thirteen things
you can do to get close to God?"
"I'd ask if you counted them all."
"Well we have fewer than six hundred and thirteen because we are
girls."
"Can you write them all down. I mean did you memorize them?"
"No, but I can look them up. Anyway, six hundred and thirteen is
a lot of ways. I mean nobody does them all, but it's kind of
like you get part credit."
"So the more of these things I do, the closer I get to God."
"Yes..."
"I still don't believe it."
"OK, we have to disagree...."
"I think so. Does it offend you to see me eat pork?"
"Not really. I mean, if I got offended by what everyone ate, I'd
hate everybody. You can't live like that."
"Gee thanks."
"I'm being honest."
"Look, Tikvah, if you could teach me something really spiritual
to get close to God, I might listen about the other stuff like
wearing tights and eating pork, or not eating pork."
"I'm not a good person to teach. We need a Rav or even a real
mora." Where was Tikvah going to get a Rav or a mora at this
time of night. She thought about calling her father. Yes... of
course.
"How come...someone taught you about the pork thing. They must
have taught you something else."
"Yeah, but I need some advice." Tikvah grabbed her phone, dialed
a number, and the conversation began.
"העלא

--- End Quote ---
"My tati said you can read the Psalms," Tikvah told her
roommate.
"Do you have a Bible?"
"Not in English."
"I guess I have to find the library then."
"You're really going to try it."
"Why not?" Corianne answered. "I need all the help I can get."
Just then the Suite Advisor pounded on the door. "Lights out!"
Albina, who was not a mora, shouted. "Lights out now!" Corianne
slipped out of bed and turned off the switch. In the darkness
Tikvah thanked HaShem for one very, big victory.
