The Kotiah-Yovanovitch International School is a grade 5-12.
boarding school, located at 418 Ridge Rd., Greenburgh, NY. For
those who don't know, that's in Westchester County near New York
City. Westchester may have some green spaces, but it is built
up, urban, but at the same time sprawling. The climate is
temperate, and it is home to the third, fourth, and sixth
largest cities in New York State.
The Kotiah-Yovanovitch campus is on the grounds of what once was
a monastery, but the Catholic church sold it a while ago. The
buildings are new, and the school itself is less than ten years
old. It is not haunted, but you don't care about any of this.
You want to get away from home. You want a chance to live "on
your own." Maybe you need a great education. Maybe the situation
with your parents is less than tolerable. Maybe you want to get
out of your small town and your small school. More likely, on
top of all this, your parents dumped you. They could have done
this for any number of reasons ranging from divorce, work
abroad, to... Well that is up to you as an author.
Kotiah-Yovanovitch might be just what you need and it might
solve your problem, but you still have to get along with your
fellow students who come from all over the world. You still have
to deal with adult authority though it doesn't pretend to love
you and its favorite form of recreation is bullshit. Finally,
you have to figure out where you are going next and what you
want to do with your life. Oh, and you're probably going
through puberty and/or exploring your sexuality, though at
Kotiah-Yovanovitch you'll have a whole lot more on your plate
than finding your soulmate or hookup.
First, Kotiah-Yovanovitch is built by an extremely OK, baby
Boomer, adult, with adult experience living away from home, and
she wants it REALISTIC. What this means for you is all
characters will deal with several challenges.
If you are a student: you came from somewhere else probably by
yourself. Somewhere else can be anywhere in the world, and what
you think is cool in one city, may not be cool in the next town.
Your roommate may not care about your distressed blue jeans
(They may distress them differently where she comes from), your
award winning video game scores, or goats. Someone has to like
goats. If you as an author play both a character and a roommate,
they still should have no prior history together even if they
get along.
If you are a student: you are going somewhere else in eight
years or fewer. There is no college affiliated with the high
school. A middle school is a more realistic combination, and
besides, you want to do something with your life and that means
you're going to keep going, to college, the military, a career,
and probably not with your best friends, although social media
has kind of changed this.
If you are an adult, you came from somewhere and you might have
other plans. How long can you last as a teacher or Suite
Advisor. The cost of living in Westchester is high, and you get
room and board at Kotiah-Yovanovitch, but not much in the way of
salary. Chances are your Kotiah-Yovanovitch job is a stepping
stone before a more lucrative position or a return to graduate
school or both.
There is a chain of command. It starts in the Residence Hhouses
(dormitories) with the SA's. SA stands for Suite Aadvisor and
continues with Residence House Directors, teachers, recreation
staff, and administration. If you are an adult you are an
authority figure and enforce the rules, with discretion of
course, but you still enforce them. If you are a kid, you deal
with the rules which include, curfew and lights out, and the
laws of New York State concerning alcohol and controlled
substances.
Adults most fear getting sued. Westchester County is in New York
State, which is in the United States, which is highly litigious.
That means people love to sue each other. Kotiah-Yovanovitch
does it's best to keep away from the civil and criminal courts.
That means the school rules prevent the kind of scandals that
attract law suits and juvenile justice. What adults fear most is
not their adolescent children having consensual sex or even
getting stoned. It's car accidents and criminal charges.
Therefore, students may not bring any of the following to
campus:
- Firearms -- pistols, rifles, semi-automatics, hand grenades
- Hunting knives
- Automobiles or motorcycles -- It does not matter if you have a
license. New York State has graduated licensing laws. Those
under eighteen cannot drive at night, except to work or school
functions, and they cannot have any other teens in the car with
them. In New York City, the driving age is eighteen.
- Fireworks, including sparklers
The campus is also alcohol and tobacco (including vaping) free,
and recreational, controlled substances (including pot) are
prohibited by the laws of New York State.
Of course some rules are made to be broken, but those who break
the rules run the risk of being caught. Punishments include
restriction to campus and sessions in the detention hall and
other similar forms of low-grade torture.
If you are a student, your pocket money is limited. There is
twenty meal a week mandatory board (food!) plus an in-suite
pantry, so no one starves, and the food is decent. The school
asks that all students have unlimited data plans on their phones
and monthly Mega-Metro Transit Passes. If you feel charitable,
you receive most of your living expenses as payments in kind and
have no bills. In a less than charitable light it's only $20 --
$60 a week or its biweekly, monthly, twice-a-year, or lump sum
equivalent as cash. You may not have an unlimited credit card.
Rich parents are stingy.
If you are a student your time is limited. You attend school 9am
to 3pm and then have either study hall or extracurriculars.
Dinner is early. There is evening study or another
extracurricular and then at about eight or nine pm you are free
on a weeknight. There are occasional free afternoons. There are
long meal times. Lights out and curfew varies according to
your age, Suite Advisor's personality, and quite frankly the
general level of rowdiness in your suite.
You have limited opportunity for privacy. If you are a student,
you have a roommate. You have a curfew. There are ways around
this, but they are not straightforward. If you are a Suite
Advisor, your door is not always open, but students can always
knocking or your app or phone can alert you. If you are a
teacher, you don't have an office of your own, and are often on
campus in the evenings. Finding privacy requires some
cleverness. You know why you may want or need privacy. Enough
said. And yes, this role play fades to black for intimate acts.
Finally, there is bullshit. The StoryGod hates bullshit, so she
tries to make it good for laughs and not as onerous as it could
be, but the morning loud speaker broadcast is cringe-worthy on a
good day. Kotiah-Yovanovitch is home of the Dazzling Dodos!
"They're not extinct and they don't lay an egg."
That said, the Kotiah-Yovanovitch is NOT a suitcase campus.
That's one of the StoryGod's reasons for keeping the cash supply
down. There are plenty of extracurriculars and both organized
and student-created on campus activities, especially during the
weekends and evenings. Who knows, boarding school might be fun
after all...
